Remembering War Heroes on 40th anniversary of 1971 India-Pakistan War

 
India Friday paid tributes to its martyred soldiers on the 40th anniversary of its victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war that culminated in the liberation of East Pakistan, now called Bangladesh.
December 16 is celebrated as 'Vijay Divas' across India.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony laid a wreath at the war memorial here and recalled the sacrifices of the war heroes who laid down their lives for the nation on Friday Dec 16,2011


1971 India-Pakistan war that led to the birth of Bangladesh


The war started Dec 3, 1971 when Pakistani jets attacked Indian airports along the border.The Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir advanced in several sectors into Pakistani territory. The war lasted 14 days, concluding with the birth of Bangladesh and surrender of around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in Dhaka and other parts of the then East Pakistan, which seceded to become Bangladesh.In the 1971 India-Pakistan War around 3,900 Indian soldiers died and 9,851 were injured.
