2012 Uttarakhand Assembly Elections



Uttarakhand was declared as a state on Nov 09, 2000 and has seen 6 CM's since then. Nityanand Swami was the 1st CM of Uttarakhand, when BJP came to power.
Within one year of his tenure, he was replaced by Bhagat Singh Koshiyari of BJP as the CM.
In 2002 elections, BJP lost the polls to Congress and Narayan Dutt Tiwari was chosen as CM.Minister.
In 2007, BJP came back to power and B C Khanduri was made the CM. He was replaced as CM by BJP leader Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank after BJP lost all 5 seats in the LS elections

Uttarakhand has 70 Assembly Constituencies(in 13 districts) for which elections will be held on January 30,2012

Counting of Votes Deferred to March 6,2012

The EC has announced that counting for all five states headed for elections is being moved from March 4 to March 6,2012.


BJP to Stay United to Fight 2012Assembly Elections

The party is facing major difficulty as there is no cohesion between two former Chief Ministers and the present CM,that is, among former CM's  Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri and Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and present CM Dr Ramesh Nishank.It was decided that the party will contest elections under the collective leadership of Nishank, Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri and Bhagat Singh Koshiyari. However, MLAs will elect a leader after the election. “We have to stay united and fight elections collectively,” said BJP President Nitin Gadkari Gadkari.

 

2 Cong leaders Join BJP - Sunday Jan 01,2012

Haldwani Municipality Chairperson Renu Adhikari along with their supporters on Sunday joined the BJP ahead of Assembly elections in the state to be held on January 30. 

Barkha Rani is the other Congress leader who joined the the BJP in the presence of party in-charge for Uttarakhand Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister BC Khanduri, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and other senior leaders

Congress Announce List of 51 Candidates 

 

The Congress on Friday Jan 06,2012 declared a list of 51 candidates for the forthcoming elections and  is confident of coming back to power, claiming there is an anti-incumbency wave against the BJP government due to a slew of corruption cases that came to light during Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank's chief ministership.

Uttarakhand CM B C Khanduri will contest from Kotdwar; ex-CM Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will contest from Doiwala; state unit chief Bishan Singh Chuphal, who is also a sitting MLA, from Didihat; and Speaker Harbansh Kapoor from Dehradun Cantt

The UKKD candidates are - Diwakar Bhatt (Devaprayag) and Om Gopal Rawat (Narendranagar). Both are sitting MLAs and will contest on BJP symbol.


 911 Aspirants For 70 Assembly Seats

"At the end of the filing of nominations process today, 911 candidates are now in the fray," Uttarakhand Chief Election Officer Radha Raturi said
The scrutiny of nomination papers would be held on Friday Jan 13,2012, while the last date of withdrawal of names is January 16,2012.
Both ruling BJP and main opposition Congress have fielded their candidates on all the 70 seats in the hill state where nearly 64 lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise.

Nearly 70 per cent polling was recorded in the Uttarakhand Assembly elections, which sealed the fate of 788 candidates including Chief Minister B C Khanduri and state Congress president Yashpal Arya.The polling to elect 70 legislators to the state Assembly largely remained "incident-free". 
About 70 per cent of the 63 lakh voters exercised their franchise till the end of polling at 5PM, state Chief Electoral Officer Radha Raturi told

The biggest setback for the BJP was the defeat of Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri who was defeated by S.S. Negi of the Congress from Kotdwar seat by 4,632 votes.

 3 BSP MLA's Give Unconditional Support to Congress

"On the direction of Mayawati, our party has decided to give full support to Congress," state BSP President Surajmal said.

Congress has already staked claimed to form government and Governor Margaret Alva said she would invite Congress once it elects a new CLP leader.Congress with 32 MLAs in the 70-member House enjoys support of three Independents and a lone UKD member to reach the majority mark of 36.

 Vijay Bahuguna Sworn in Uttarakhand CM


Congress MP Vijay Bahuguna on Tuesday March 13,2012 took oath as Uttrakhand Chief Minister.Vijay Bahuguna was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Margret Alva.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Harish Rawat is reported to have resigned from the post after the Congress high command on Monday named Vijay Bahaguna as the next Uttarakhand chief minister. Reports said Rawat has sent his resignation to PM Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

 

Even though Union Minister Harish Rawat has claimed that he will ‘not be a cause of crisis’, Congress’ Uttarakhand problem appears far from over as 18 Congress Party MLAs did not turn up for the customary oath taking ceremony in the state Assembly.

 

Shailandra Mohan Singhal is the New Pro-tem Speaker of the Uttarakhand Assembly

Jaspur MLA Shailandra Mohan Singhal, who has been elected for the third consecutive term, was on Thursday March 15,2012 sworn-in as the pro-tem Speaker of the newly-constituted Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly.

 

Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Elected - March 26,2012

Congress Govt in Uttarakhand on Monday March 26,2012 cleared a major hurdle with the election of its candidate Govind Songh Kunjwal(an MLA from Jageshwar in Almora District ) as the Speaker of the Assembly by a good margin of 8 votes over BJP nominee Harbans Kapoor.Govind Songh Kunjwal got 39 Votes and Harbans Kapoor got 31 Votes.

 10 Member Cabinet Formed - Tuesday March 20,2012

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Tuesday March 20,2012 expanded his cabinet by inducting 10 members including one member each of BSP and UKD and two independent MLAs who helped Congress gain majority in the assembly.

Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna Wins Trust Vote

Vijay Bahuguna Govt on Thursday March 29,2012 won a trust vote in the Uttarakhand Assembly amid a walkout by the opposition BJP members demanding that secret ballot system should have been used for voting on the motion.

39 members voted in favour of the trust motion tabled by Vijay Bahuguna.All the 31 Congress members besides the 3-member BSP and 3 independents as well as lone member from the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal(UKD) voted in favour of the trust motion.


Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna wins by-election

 

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Wednesday July 11,2012 won the Sitarganj Assembly seat by a record margin of 39,954 votes over his nearest Bharatiya Janata Party rival(victory margin is the highest in all the Assembly elections in Uttarakhand)Prakash Pant.

The Sitarganj by-election was necessitated by the resignation of BJP MLA Kiran Mandal who reportedly quit in favour of  Vijay Bahuguna.
