EC Announces 2012 Assembly Poll Dates for 5 States EC announces Assembly poll dates for five states

The Election Commission on Saturday Dec 24,2011announced the schedule for Assembly polls to be held in five states .Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi(flanked by Election Commissioners VS Sampath and HS Brahma) announced that UP will go to elections in7 phases, while assembly elections in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa will be held in a single-phase. 


The model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect(wef Saturday Dec 24,23011) in all the five states and will also apply to the Central government. 
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used for polling in all five states. 




Photo-identity cards will be mandatory for identification of voters.


Polling Dates


UP, with 403 Assembly constituencies (85 reserved for SCs), will witness polling on February 4, 8, 11, 15, 19, 23 and 28 -  in7 phases.Uttar Pradesh has 11.19 crore voters.UP has 1,28,112 polling stations.


Uttarakhand, with 70 constituencies (of which 13 are reserved for SCs and 2 for STs), will go to polls on January 30,2012.  Uttarakhand will have 9744  polling stations.
Punjab, with 117 constituencies (of which 34 are reserved), will witness polling in single phase on January 30,2012.Uttarakhand 57.4 lakh voters.Punjab will have 19,724 polling stations.
The north-eastern state Manipur, with 60 constituencies (of which one is reserved for SCs and 19 for STs), will go to polls on January 28,2012.Manipur  16.77 lakh voters.Manipur will have 2,325 polling stations.
Goa, with 40 constituencies (of which only one is reserved for SC), on March 3,2012.Goa has 10.12 lakh voters.Goa will have a total of 1,612 stations.


Counting Day
The counting for all the states will be held together on March 4,2012
