Kyrgyzstan,officially the Kyrgyz Republic, located in Central Asia is one of the world's 6 independent Turkic States (along with Turkey,Azerbaijan,Turmenistan,Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan)got independence from the Soviet Union on August 31, 1991 has a population of 5.5 million and its capital is Bishkek.The official languages are - Kyrgyz and Russian
Political System
Kyrgyzstan is officially a Democratic Parliamentary Republic. Kyrgyzstan elects the President for a 6 year term and the Supreme Council(Parliament) consists of 90 members filled by proportional representation.
2011 Kyrgyz Presidential Elections - Oct 30,2011
Presidential Elections were held on October30, 2011 to replace Interim President Roza Otunbayeva and was won by the former PM Almazbek Atambayev of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan.Roza Otunbayeva, who has led the country since Mr Bakiyev was ousted, was not contesting the polls.
Just over 60% of the Kyrgyzstan's three million eligible voters cast ballots, election officials said after polls closed.The central election commission said with 95% of the votes counted,Election commission chief Tuigunaly Abdraimovwon said with Mr Atambayev taking 63% of the vote, there would be no need for a second round.His two main rivals were each polling just under 15%.(Kamchibek Tashiyev and Adakhan Madumarov)
The election followed the 2010 Kyrgyzstan riots,during which the incumbent President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted by protesters and an interim government led by Roza Otunbayeva was formed.
