2017 India Tour of Sri Lanka - Upul Tharanga To Lead Sri Lanka In ODI Series Against India

Upul Tharanga will lead a 15-man Sri Lanka squad in the the five-match ODI series against India that begins in Dambulla on Sunday August 20,2017

Tharanga endured a horrendous Test series against India, scoring only 88 runs in six innings, which Sri Lanka lost by a comprehensive 0-3 margin. But the upcoming series will be the left-handed batsman's first in-charge of the team after Angelo Mathews gave up the ODI captaincy post the 2-3 loss against Zimbabwe at home in July. While Mathews is still part of the squad, seasoned pacer Lasith Malinga has also made a comeback.
There are two other changes from the Sri Lankan squad which featured in the last three ODIs against Zimbabwe.
Pacer Nuwan Pradeep and all-rounder Asela Gunaratne are out due to injuries and their places in the side has been taken by young fast bowler Lahiru Kumara and left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara, who both featured in the recent Test series against the Indians.
Skipper Tharanga has called for support from his countrymen ahead of what should prove to be another tough outing against the higher-ranked India.
"Every team goes through a rough patch," he said. "This is something that happens in cycles to every team and every nation no matter how great a cricketing nation they are. The support of our fans plays a big role in lifting the morale of the team.
"We play for our country and our goal is to bring pride to our family of 20 million in this nation - so your support is something that matters greatly to us," Tharanga added.
Sri Lanka last played India in an ODI series in November 2014-15 (in India) and were blanked 0-5.
The Islanders, however, upset India in their group game at the Oval in the recent Champions Trophy.
Sri Lanka ODI Squad: Upul Tharanga (Capt), Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Milinda Siriwardana, Malinda Pushpakumara, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Thisara Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando.

Emma Stone Leads Forbes Highest Paid Actress List; No Asian Makes it to Top 10

This year's list of the world highest paid actresses by Forbes is out and unfortunately, no Indian actress had made it to the Top 10. Last year, Deepika Padukone was ranked at Number 10 in 2016, thanks to her successful home run and big Hollywood debut opposite Vin Diesel in Return of Xander Cage.

Oscar winning actress, Emma Stone has topped the list with a gross earning of $26 million, followed by Jennifer Aniston. Jennifer Lawrence, who had been the queen of the Forbes list since 2014, slipped to the third position due to an inactive box-office year

The list examined actresses all over the world, but no stars from Asia made the cut, as Fan Bingbing and Deepika Padukone dropped off due to quieter years. Deepika's starring role in xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage contributed hugely to her earnings of $10 million last year. The actress has no announced International project currently and is just bust with Padmavati, co-starring Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor.

Also absent from Forbes' 2017 list is Scarlett Johansson - this is the first time in three years that she hasn't made the grade.

The top three on the list of 10 are the only actresses to have made over $20 million. They are followed by Melissa McCarthy, Mila Kunis, Emma Watson, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts and Amy Adams.

Forbes reports a 16% drop in the cumulative earnings of the world's top actresses. Forbes also notes that half the actresses on the list are over 40 - Jennifer Aniston, Melissa McCarthy, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts and Amy Adams - a significant achievement given the scarcity of roles for women their age.

Here is the full list of the world's highest paid actresses and earnings as ranked by Forbes:

1. Emma Stone - $26 million

2. Jennifer Aniston - $25.5 million

3. Jennifer Lawrence - $24 million

4. Melissa McCarthy - $18 million

5. Mila Kunis - $15.5 million

6. Emma Watson - $14 million

7. Charlize Theron - $14 million

8. Cate Blanchett, - $12 million

9. Julia Roberts - $12 million

10. Amy Adams - $11.5 million

Jamshedi Navroz or the Parsi New Year falls today Thursday August 17,2017

Jamshedi Navroz or the Parsi New Year falls today i.e. August 17th 2017 and marks the beginning of New Year as per the Parsi Calendar. Jamshedi Navroz got its name from the legendary King of Persia - Jamshed, who is said to have introduced the solar calculation in the Parsi Calendar.

Jamshedi Navroz is a regional national holiday in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra that house a significant population of Parsis. Parsis are also known as Zoroastrians as they follow Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest known monotheistic religions founded by the Prophet Zarathustra or Zoroaster (Greek) in Pre-Islam era of ancient Iran approximately 3500 years ago in 650 BC. After the invasion of Islamic armies in the 7th Century, Zoroastrians fled Persia and mainly dwelled in India.

According to history of Persia, after the rise of Islam, only 10,000 Persians were left and today the count is approximately 2.6 million worldwide. India is home to the largest group of Parsis from around the World where the community has been a significant part of the economic and industrial growth of the country and lives in harmony with various other religions like Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and many more.

In Iran and other parts, Zoroastrians celebrate the Persian New Year using the Fasli/Bastnai calendar according to which this day falls on the moment of Vernal Equinox, mostly on March 21st every year. However, Parsis in India follow the Shahenshahi calendar which does not account for leap years and hence the Persian New Year is celebrated mostly on August 17th, approximately 150-200 days after its original day of the vernal equinox.

The celebrations of Jamshedi Navroz or Parsi New Year are similar to the Nowruz spring festival where people celebrate the commencement of the New Year amidst exchange of gifts, donations, new clothes, house cleaning and lots of fun and frolic.

2017-18 Premier League - Everton complete record £45 million signing of Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson WednesdayAug 16,2017

Everton signed Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Premier League rivals Swansea for a club record £45 million ($58m, 49.4m euros) on Wednesday Aug 16,2017
The 27-year-old penned a five-year contract worth a reported £100,000 a week to become Everton`s record signing, topping the £31.8 million they paid Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku in 2014.
"Hopefully I will continue to create goals and score goals for the team and contribute to the kind of success we`re seeking at the club," Sigurdsson told evertontv.
"This is an ambitious club and it is clear we are moving in a really good direction. The most important thing is that this team keeps winning games and climbing the table and does that throughout the season."
Sigurdsson, who played a pivotal role in Swansea retaining their Premier League status last term after scoring nine goals and creating 13, pulled out of their pre-season tour to the United States and was not included in the squad for last weekend`s 0-0 draw with Southampton.
Swansea had already turned down two bids from Everton as well as rejecting a reported £40 million offer from 2016 champions Leicester City at the beginning of the summer.
Sigurdsson joined Swansea on loan in January 2012 from German club Hoffenheim before a permanent transfer to the South Wales club collapsed and Tottenham signed him for two years.
After making 58 top-flight appearances for Spurs, he rejoined Swansea for a second spell and spent three seasons at the Liberty Stadium.
He has also played 50 times for Iceland, helping his country to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.
Everton coach Ronald Koeman has now spent over £100 million in recruiting Sigurdsson, former favourite Wayne Rooney, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (£30m), midfielder Davy Klaassen (£23.6m), defender Michael Keane (£30m), Cuco Martina and Sandro Ramirez.
However, a considerable proportion of the spending has been financed by the £75 million sale of Lukaku to Manchester United.
"It took some time but finally we have signed the player (Sigurdsson)," Koeman said.
"In my opinion, in his position he is one of the best in the Premier League. We have the player here and that`s really good for the team."

Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017 - All You Need To Know

On Thursday Ag 10,2017, the Rajya Sabha passed the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017.
The Bill replaces the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, that was passed in May 2017, after the Budget session of the Parliament.

What does the Bill do?

The Bill basically empowers the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to give directions to banks to act against loan defaulters. The Bill seeks to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 by inserting provisions for handling cases related to stressed assets. Stressed assets are loans on which the borrower has defaulted or it has been restructured. The RBI may, from time to time, issue directions to banks for resolution of stressed assets. The Central Government can authorise the RBI to issue directions to banks for initiating proceedings in case of a default in loan repayment. These proceedings would be under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.
The RBI may also form committees to advise banks on the resolution of stressed assets. The members will be appointed or approved by the RBI.

What is the background?

The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance was promoted on May 4 to address the reportedly high levels of stress faced by the banking sector at the time.
The RBI had, in June, identified 12 'defaulters' who account for around 25% of India's non-performing assets (NPA) and informed banks to take up insolvency proceedings against them. A NPA is a loan or advance for which the borrower has failed to repay the principle or interest for a period of 90 days. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the Parliament earlier this month that the "proceedings had been initiated in the 12 cases" and the RBI is expected to refer more cases to the banks.
Mr Jaitley said that the NPAs had begun during the UPA regime and that the sectors that had the most NPAs were Steel, Infrastructure, Power and Textiles. Public sector banks were hit the most as big industrial and infrastructure programmes were supported by them in the hope that there would be further expansion.
On July 24, 2017, the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha.

How did the Opposition react?

Trinamool Congress member Sougata Ray said he was opposed to the banking regulation ordinance and said it was a “desperate step by a desperate government.” When asked about the urgency to pass this Bill, Mr Jaitley said that it was "already too late" and that the rising NPAs was affecting banks' capacity to lend money to smaller creditors, which in turn was impacting growth.

How world newspapers reported India’s independence in 1947

Indian independence was a historic moment for the world. The largest and most important colony of the British empire was freed. Further, the route to freedom for India was unique in its capacity that it drew on the Gandhian theory of non-violence, something that went on to inspire several leaders across the globe. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the major newspapers of the world had culled out a significant part of their front pages to underline the nationalist aspirations, the birth of the two nations and the celebrations as well as massacre that accompanied the same. Incidentally though, while the partition of Punjab and the bloodshed resulting from it, made its way to the front pages of almost every newspaper, the partition of Bengal was barely ever mentioned at all.
Here is how some of the major newspapers of the world reported on Indian independence in 1947.
The New York Times
Flaunting a large map of the Indian subcontinent, as it stood on August 15, 1947, the front page of the American daily, New York Times reported on the celebration of freedom on one hand and the grief of partition on the other. Further, it also reported on the fact that a number of princely states were yet to decide on the nationality they wished to adhere to. The ambiguity of the status of the princely states was made evident from the map which left out states like Hyderabad and Kashmir that had not yet made up their mind.

The Washington Post
The front page of the Washington Post carried a long reportage on the celebrations following Indian independence. The paper made a keen observation of the oriental pomp accompanying the celebrations. “They began a new chapter of two independent dominions with celebrations in oriental pomp and splendor- marred by bloodshed, death and terror in wide sections of the country,” wrote the paper. The speech of Nehru, the celebratory mood in the Red Fort and the burning of Punjab were all reported under the headline “India achieves sovereignty, amid scenes of wild rejoicing.”
The Chicago Tribune
The focus of the American news daily Chicago Tribune, on the other hand, was on Lord Mountbatten taking oath as the first governor-general of India. While reporting on the increasing death toll in Punjab and the celebration of the role of Gandhi, the Chicago Tribune’s reportage referred to the newly born nations as “Hindu India” and “Muslim Pakistan”. The second page of the newspaper carried a special section dedicated to Pakistan under the headline, “Jinnah frosty as he wins his dream of Moslem state.”
The Irish Times
One of the very first British colonies to gain independence, Ireland shared a special solidarity with India in her long sought after freedom. Accordingly, the Irish daily laid its focus on the Indian accomplishment of independence. “The last stroke of midnight, booming from the dome of New Delhi’s Parliament buildings, set off the highest, noisiest and most joyful celebrations ever experienced in the East,” wrote the newspaper under the headline, “India celebrates as Britain hands over control.”
The Daily Telegraph
The celebrated British daily chalked a large portion of their front page to reportage of Indian independence. Large portions of their report were devoted to the communication between the British and Indian political elite, while a significant section was headed as “Indians praise Britain” and another as “British sagacity”. A photograph of the Union Jack at the Residency of Lucknow adorned the front page as well which said that “the Union Jack flying from the tower of the ruined Residency at Lucknow, from which it had never been lowered since recapture of the town after the siege of 1857. It was hauled down for the first and last time at midnight last night, marking the transference of power to the Dominion of India (Hindustan).”

The Times of India, the Indian Express and the Hindustan Times
Back home, the news dailies like Times of India, Hindustan Times and the Indian Express were paginated with the pride of independence. The front page of each of the papers were basking in glory of the jubilation being observed across the cities of Delhi and Bombay as Nehru delivered his ‘tryst with destiny’ speech. The birth of Pakistan too was given due importance as the paper reported on Jinnah’s communication with Britain regarding the future relationship between Pakistan and its former coloniser. Also reported were the tasks ahead for the newfound nations.
