A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a geographical region that is designed to export goods and provide employment. SEZs are exempt from federal laws regarding taxes, quotas, FDI-bans, labour laws and other restrictive laws in order to make the goods manufactured in the SEZ at a globally competitive price

The Special Economic Zones Act, 2005, was passed by Parliament in May, 2005 which received Presidential assent on the 23rd of June, 2005

The major incentives and facilities available to SEZ developers include:-
  • Exemption from customs/excise duties for development of SEZs for authorized operations approved by the BOA.
  • Income Tax exemption on income derived from the business of development of the SEZ in a block of 10 years in 15 years under Section 80-IAB of the Income Tax Act.
  • Exemption from minimum alternate tax under Section 115 JB of the Income Tax Act.
  • Exemption from dividend distribution tax under Section 115O of the Income Tax Act.
  • Exemption from Central Sales Tax (CST).
  • Exemption from Service Tax (Section 7, 26 and Second Schedule of the SEZ Act).


US honours 3 Indian-Americans with 'Champions of Change' Award -Wednesday May 29,2013


The US has honoured 3 Indian-Americans with the 'Champions of Change Award' -

Shradha Agarwal from Chicago
Riddhiman Das from Kansas and
Amar Sawhney from Massachusets
for their achievements as Immigrant Innovators and Entrepreneurs
They were among the 11 honoured

Shradha Agarwal is co-founder of Context Media

Riddhiman Das from Kansas came to the United States in 2008 to pursue an American college education and studied Computer Science, Mathematics and Entrepreneurship.As an undergraduate student, he co-founded three startup tech companies and is also heavily involved with a Kansas City-based technology startup that has commercialised the Eyeprint Verification System as a simple, safe replacement for entering passwords on smartphones.


An inventor and serial entrepreneur in the field of medical devices, Amar Sawhney holds over 120 patents, which form the basis for several first-of-a-kind medical devices that have helped millions of patients worldwide

2013 Bhutanese National Assembly Election - May 31,2013 & July 20,2013


By law, the National Assembly is required to be reconstituted within 90 days of its previous term expiring. As the term of the Assembly Elected in 2008 expired on April 20,2013, this meant that the new Assembly would need to have been elected by July 20,2013

The election will be held in two rounds. In the first round parties contest all 20 Dzongkhags(administrative and judicial district of Bhutan) . The parties with the two highest vote tallies then progress to the second round, in which they put forward candidates in each of the 47 National Assembly constituencies.

The election for the 47 seats of the National Assembly is the second to be held in Bhutan since the country became a constitutional monarchy in 2008.

There are 381,790 registered voters out of a total population of some 750,000 and all 5 political parties in the country are contesting the election .Polls opens at 0900 (local time) and close at 1700 (local time).There are 850 polling stations spread across 47 constituencies in 20 districts.

2008 Bhutanese National Assembly Election - March 24,2008
Two parties were registered by the Election Commission of Bhutan to contest the election.They are -
Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party(DPT)led by Jigme Y Thinley and
People's Democratic Party(PDP)led by Sangay Ngedup

DPT won the election securing 67% votes and getting 45 seats in the National Assembly whereas PDP secured only 33% Votes and got 2 seats in the National Assembly
