Siddaramaiah elected Karnataka's new chief minister -Friday May 10,2013



K Siddaramaiah has been elected as Karnataka's new chief minister on Friday. This comes after Congress adopted secret balloting route to select the new chief minister for the state after the party's thumping victory in the assembly election.

The 121 Congress MLAs elected by the people of Karnataka voted via secret ballot to elect him

Earlier in the day,Siddaramaiah moved a resolution requesting that the Congress legislative party leadership be left to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. It was seconded by HK Patil, Roshan Baig, Shyamanur Shivashankarappa and DK Shivakumar

  • Siddaramaiah is a backward caste leader(Kuruba community) with a big support base in the state and has been the Opposition leader who scripted the Congress' successful campaign in this election
  • A five-time MLA from Varuna in south Karnataka
  • Once part of the JD (S) and an HD Deve Gowda protege
  • Joined Congress in 2006

  1. Now that we have a man of humble beginnings as the CM, who is academically qualified and credited with a law degree, I am sure Karnataka will return to a semblance of respectability. Hitches & glitches are expected in Indian politics, but I am sure he will circumvent those.
