The rapid transit system aimed at reducing the traffic congestion in Mumbai will be built in three phases over a 15-year period, with overall completion expected in 2021.It is the country's third metro system following Kolkata and New Delhi
The project is being developed by Reliance Infrastructure led consortium Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL) under public-private-partnership
The foundation stone for the first corridor of the Mumbai metro rail was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in June 2006 and Mumbai Metro project Construction work began only in February 2008.

The trial run was conducted on Wednesday May 1,2013 across a 3-km stretch between the Versova car depot and the Azad Nagar metro station. The section is a part of the 11.40km Versova-Ghatkopar corridor which will provide a vital east-west link and drastically reduce travel time from the existing 90 minutes to barely 20 minutes.
The first phase metro corridor will be operational up to the airport in September 2013 while it will becomes fully operational by the end of December 2013
