What is spot-fixing?


Spot-fixing is betting on the result of a certain ball or over, or the performance of an individual player, rather than the result of a match.



It may or may not affect the eventual outcome of the match but does impact the scorecard.

The bookies are not worried about the outcome of the match; they fix ball by ball

Former Ranji Player,two others arrested - Sunday May 19,2013
The Delhi Police Special Cell on sunday May 19,2013 arrested 3 more persons including a former Ranji Player from Aurangabad for their alleged involvement in spot fixing IPL 6.

The 3 arrested were -Sunil Bhatia,Kiran Dole and Manish Guddewar(played for Vidarba in Ranji Trophy during 2003-05) all residents of Nagpur.They are alleged to be Bookies whose primary role was to mediate between players and Bookies

Ex-Ranji player Baburao Yadav arrested - Tuesday May 21,2013

Baburao Yadav, who represented Indian Railways in Ranji Trophy, is yet another cricketer to be arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell in connection with spot-fixing allegations in IPL 6

BaburaoYadav was produced in a city court on Tuesday along with 14 other accused persons, including S. Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Chandila. While four of the bookies were sent to judicial custody, the court granted five days’ police custody for the others

 Based on a complaint lodged by the Rajasthan Royals management against three of their players, the police have invoked Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) apart from Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy)

Vindoo Dara Singh,Dara Singh’s son among three arrested 

The Mumbai crime branch on Tuesday May 21,2013 arrested Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh, son of wrestler late Dara Singh, for his alleged links with bookies being probed by the police, such as Pawan Jaipur, Sanjay Jaipur and Jupiter, and for his alleged participation in betting.

On May 20,2013 Monday night, the police also arrested Alpesh Bhagwandas Patel, 39, an alleged facilitator of hawala money between the bookies in India, such as Ramesh Vyas arrested by Mumbai police on May 14, and Dubai.The police have also seized cash worth Rs. 1.28 crore from Patel, along with two mobile phones and an account book which had details of the money transactions

Prem Taneja was also arrested from the Mumbai International Airport late on Monday night, for allegedly working as a mediator between Singh and the bookies

  • Betting on sports is illegal in India

  • Three Pakistan test players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, and Mohammad Amir - were banned and jailed for spot-fixing in 2011, after an inquiry found they had  deliberately bowled no-balls in a Test Match at Lord's, in exchange for money

  • With the latest controversy,as Rajasthan Royals -S Sreesanth; Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila are arrested, the focus is back on spot-fixing which is the latest threat to cricket's image
