2013 Kenyan General Election - March 4,2013


General elections will be held on March 4, 2013, electing the President, Senators, County Governors, Members of Parliament, Civic Wards and Women County Representatives.

It will be the first elections held under the New Constituion which was passed during the 2010 Referendum also be the first general elections run by Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission


General dates

 

  • General Election: 4 March 2013
  • Party Nomination Deadline: 18 January 2013
  • Submission of nominees of party lists for Nominated Positions: 31stJanuary, 2013
The IEBC also indicate that disputes relating to or arising from nominations will be determined within seven days of the lodging of the dispute with the Commission.

Voter Registration

Voter registration ran from Nov19, 2012 for 30 days.Voter registration was carried out using Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits which would reduce certain incidents of fraud.After Dec 18,2012 deadline, the IEBC released the provisional voter numbers showing a registered base of 14.3 million voters.

 Political Party Coalition and Alliances
The law requires all Kenyan Political Parties to register any coalition agreements with the Registrar of Political Parties by Dec 4, 2012 .Four coalitions formed by the deadline include:

2013 Kenyan Presidential Election
Incumbent President  Mwai Kibaki will not be eligible to contest as he is constitutionally barred having served the maximum 2 terms.

As per the New Constituion,presidential candidates face a second round run-off between the first and the second if no-one achieves a simple majority  in the first round or if the winner does not get 25% of the votes in at least 24 counties

Candidates

On Jan 24,  2013, the IEBC begun collecting the initial batch of documents to be used for processing the names of presidential candidates who will contest. Candidate were required to present a letter expressing intention to contest the presidency and lists of 2,000 signatures from supporters in more than half of the 47 counties.Following candidates are cleared by the IEBC -

Kenya holds first-ever Presidential Debate - Monday Feb 11,2013

 

Kenya has held its first presidential debate - between all eight candidates in next month's tightly contested poll.Millions of Kenyans watched and listened to Feb 11,2013 Monday's debate, broadcast live on national television, as well as You Tube 

The first debate, held on February 11, attracted as many as 15 million viewers, according to TV monitoring agencies - an impressive feat for a country of 14.3 million registered voters



 2013 Senate Elections

As per the new constitution,this year election would be the first election where there would be election of Senators representing the newly created 47 counties.

2013 National Assembly Elections

The election will involve the election members of parliament to represent the 290 constituencies and 47 women representatives for each of the 47 counties

Kenyan General Election Begins -Monday March 4,2013 


Kenyans began voting on Monday in a general election, in which two top contenders for President are war crimes suspects and a half-brother to US President Barack Obama is running for governor.

Presidential Candidates
Prime Minister Raila Odinga is making his third attempt at the presidency, having unsuccessfully stood in 1997 and 2007. Widely regarded as the favourite this time, he claims to have been robbed of victory by vote-rigging in the last election.

Born the son of Kenya's first vice-president, Jaramogi Oginga Odina, in 1945, he has a passionate following in his native Nyanza region, in Kenya's west. He is unpopular in central Kenya, the heartland of the Kikuyu community, who are seen as rivals of Mr Odinga's Luo people.
He is the candidate of the Coalition of Reforms and Democracy (Cord)


Uhuru Kenyatta(Dy PM of Kenya)born in 1961 is the son of Kenya's founding President, Jomo Kenyatta, and also said to be heir to one of the country's largest fortunes.

He has been indicted by the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity during the 2007-8 post-election violence
Uhuru Kenyatta lost to President Kibaki in 2002 after having been groomed as successor to former President Daniel arap Moi. He backed Kibaki in 2007, becoming one of the most powerful members of his cabinet
Kenyatta's Jubilee Coalition has a powerful source of support in two of Kenya's major ethnic groups - his own Kikuyu and the Kalenjin of running mate William Ruto, who has also been indicted by the ICC. The Kikuyu in particular see Mr Kenyatta as the Njamba ("hero") who "defended" them in 2007.

Kenyatta and his vice-presidential running mate William Ruto are among four people indicted by the International Criminal Court for their alleged role in the bloodshed

The elections come amid fears of a repeat of the ethnically driven violence that was unleashed in December 2007, when Mr. Kibaki triumphed over Mr. Odinga in a presidential run-off vote.More than 1,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced by the time the two leaders formed a unity government in April 2008.

Opinion polls show a tight race between Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his deputy Uhuru Kenyatta.





Uhuru Kenyatta Heading For Victory

Uhuru Kenyatta, the Kenyan presidential candidate indicted for crimes against humanity, was heading for victory after he opened up a double digit lead over his main rival

Kenyatta was ahead with 53 per cent to Raila Odinga's 42 per cent with ballots from Monday's election counted in around half of the country's 33,000 polling stations. 

Both were neck-and-neck with about 44 per cent in opinion polls before the vote
