With the last date for withdrawing nomination papers
ending on Wednesday, the battle lines were drawn for the urban local
bodies (ULBs) elections to be held on March 7.
For
the first time, a quadrangular fight among the Congress, the Janata Dal
(Secular), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Karnataka Janata
Paksha (KJP) is emerging in the State.
As many as 21,974 candidates are contesting in 4,867 wardsAccording to the State Election Commission, no nomination papers were received for 24 of the 4,967 wards and 85 candidates were elected unopposed
In all, 5,900 candidates are in the fray as Independents and they are expected to give a tough fight to candidates field by political parties
The number of candidates of political parties in the fray are -
- Congress 4,492
- BJP 3,954
- Janata Dal(S) 3,651
- Karnataka Janata Paksha 1,966
- Badavara Shramikara Mattu Raithara (BSR) Congress 1,496 and
- Communist Party of India (Marxist) 133
