Olympic Games - Indian Medal Winners

Indian athletes have won a total of 20 medals, mostly in Hockey . For a period of time, India's men's field hockey team was dominant in Olympic competition, winning 11 medals in 12 Olympiads between 1928 and 1980, including six successive gold medals from 1928–1956.

2012 London Olympic Games

India won 6 Medals(2Silver and 4 Bronze).The details are -

1)Gagan Narang Wins Bronze in Men's 10m Air Rifle Event












2)Vijay Kumar( Indian Army ) wins Silver Medal  in the Men's 25 Metre Rapid Fire Event 


The Gold Medal went to Cuban Leuris Pupo while Chinese Feng Ding got the Bronze Medal

                                                                         









3)Saina Newhwal Wins Bronze Medal in the Women's Singles Badminton Event
 


India's Saina Nehwal won the bronze medal in badminton singles at the London Olympics 2012 after she was declared winner in the play-off match as her Chinese opponent Wang Xin retired hurt.
Wang Xin won the first game 21-18 despite the injury she suffered at the end of the first game. She came back in the second game to win a point but the injury haunted again before finally pulling out of the match.

4)India's Mary Kom lost to Nicola Adams(GBR) 6-11 in the Women's Flyweight (51kg) semi-final but won a bronze medal at the London Olympics

Nicola Adams, ranked No. 2 in the world for flyweight boxing and the the current European Champion and three-time World Championship silver medallist dominated  Mary Kom(India) in the ring with a flurry of powerful combinations.

1)The 1st Olympic round was held on Aug 05, 2012, where Mary Kom defeated Karolina Michalczuk(Poland) 19-14 (3rd women's boxing match ever to be fought at the Olympics)

5)Yogeshwar Dutt defeated Korea DPR’s Jong Myong Ri in the 3rd Round of Repechage to claim Bronze Medal in the 60kg Wrestling Competition.

The Korean wrestler took the first period 1-0, but Yogeshwar Dutt took the second by the same score line before taking the final period 6-0 to win


Yogeshwar Dutt defeated Bulgaria's Anatolie llarionovitch Guidea in the qualification.

 He then lost to Russia's Besik Kudukhov in the pre-quarterfinals, but his Olympic medal hopes were kept alive when he qualified for the repechage round after Kudukhov, the bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Games, won his quarter-final match 3-1 against Iran’s Masoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari and semi-final 3-0 against Myong Ri to qualify for the final. 
In the first round of Repechage Yogeshwar Dutt defeated Puerto Rico's Franklin Gomez Matos, the world No. 2


 and in the second he beat Esmaeilpoorjouybari(Iran)




NOTE - It was India's 3rd Wrestling Medal at the Olympics after Kashaba Jadhav's bronze in the 1952 Helsinki Games and  Sushil Kumar won a Bronze Medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games

 6) Sushil Kumar won India its 6th and final medal of the 2012 London Olympics after settling for silver in the final of the Men's 66kg Freestyle Wrestling event
Sushil Kumar has created history by becoming the first Indian to win two individual Olympic medals (has won Bronze Medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics)
Sushil Kumar who reached the final after defeating Akzhurek Tanatarov of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals, was beaten by Japan's Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu 3-1 in a short and swift final

Sushil Kumar defeated defending champion Ramazan Sahin of Turkey in the Round of 16 and defeated
 

Uzbekistan's Ikhtiyor Naruzov 3-1 in the quarter-final. 


2008 Beijing Olympics
2008 Beijing Olympics has been the best ever Olympics for India with India winning 3Olympic medals in 3 different sports -
Abhinav Bindra in the Men's 100 Metres Air Rifle winning the1st  individual Olympic Gold Medal

Sushil Kumar in the 66 Kg Freestyle Wrestling winning the Bronze Medal and

Vijender Singh in the 75 Kg Boxing winning the Bronze Medal

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won the Silver Medal in the Men's Double Trap Shooting


2000 Sydney Olympics
Karnam Malleswari won the Bronze Medal  in Women's 69 Kg Weightlifting


1996 Atlanta Olympics
Leander Paes won the Bronze Medal in Men's Single Tennis


1952 Helsinki,Finland Olympics
Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav was India's 1st Individual Olympic Medalist.He won the Bronze Medal in the Freestyle Wrestling




Norman Gilbert Pritchard (June 23, 1877 – Oct 31, 1929)
was born in Calcutta to George Petersen Pritchard and Helen Maynard Pritchard .
He was the1st Indian athlete to participate in the Olympic Games.  He was also the 1st Athlete from India  and 1st Athlete representing an Asian Nation to win an Olympic medal.
He won 2 silver medals in the 1900 Paris,France Olympics -
1)Men's 200 Metres and
2)Men's 200 Metres Hurdles
