MI and CSK ended their round-robin stage of the Indian T20 League with contrasting results.
Mumbai finished at the top spot in the eight-team point table after registering a crushing nine-wicket victory over Kolkata in their last league match at the Wankhede Stadium.

Lasith Malinga (three for 35), Jasprit Bumrah (two for 31), Hardik Pandya (two for 20) and Krunal Pandya (0 for 14) all shone with the ball to restrict Kolkata to a lowly score of 133 for seven in their stipulated 20 overs.

In reply, Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma (55) and opener Quinton de Kock (30) and Suryakumar Yadav (46) all made significant contributions to help their side not only cross the mark in just 16.1 overs but also take them to the top of the point table.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai, on the other hand, dashed their hopes of making a top-place finish in the league stage with a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Punjab at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium.

Faf du Plessis (96) and Suresh Raina (53) smashed blistering knocks to guide Chennai to a competitive score of 170 for five after being asked to bat first. In reply, Chennai failed to defend their good total as KL Rahul (71), Nicolas Pooran (36) and Chris Gayle (28) chased down the target for Punjab in 18 overs

Mumbai come into the game having won their last two matches, against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. CSK come into the game on the back of a loss to Kings XI Punjab in Mohali.

CSK also have an injury issue, with Kedar Jadhav out of the tournament with a shoulder problem.

Not too long ago, Rohit Sharma called the rivalry the 'El Classico' of IPL.

That's how fierce the duel between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians has been over the years. It's perhaps the only major rivalry in the tournament.

It's apt that these two top sides will play the first qualifier of the 2019 edition on Tuesday May 07

On any other day, CSK would have been firm favourites for the match given the match is in their 'Den', the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai.

However, if at all there's one team that can claim to have had the edge over CSK in Chennai, it's MI. Rohit Sharma's side was the only team to beat CSK at Chepauk this season.

In fact, MI have  not lost a game in Chennai since 2010.

Chennai Super Kings have lost 4 of their 6 meetings to Mumbai Indians at Chepauk

MI is the only team to have a positive head-to-head record vs CSK

Mumbai defeated Chennai in both the two league-stage matches of IPL 2019

MS Dhoni's decision to bat first backfired as CSK top order collapsed as the spin trio of Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar and Jayant Yadav choked CSK in their own backyard

Rahul Chahar was the most impressive bowler for MI, finishing with figures of 4-0-14-2

A 66-run partnership between M S Dhoni (37*) and Ambati Rayudu (42*) helped CSK post a competitive total after a poor start

MI too suffered a horrible start in run chase, losing the openers inside 4 overs

But Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan (28) stood solid for MI with a 80-run partnership for the 3rd wicket

Suryakumar Yadav struck his seventh IPL fifty (71*) as he steadied the MI run chase

Towards the end, Yadav along with Hardik Pandya (11*) took MI across the line with 9 balls to spare
