A tropical cyclone that
hit the North-Eastern Somali Region of Puntland over the weekend killed
up to 100 people.Winds reached 90km an hour and as much as 350mm of rain fell
during the storm in an area that has an average annual rainfall of 250mm
Puntland, an arid region of north-east Somalia, declared itself an autonomous state in August 1998Puntland is a destination for many Somalis displaced by violence in the south; some of them attempt to make the sea crossing to Yemen
Since 2005, the region has become famous as the hub of a burgeoning piracy operation in the seas around Somalia, particularly in the Gulf of Aden
The semi-autonomous region was hit by strong winds, heavy rains and flash floods on Saturday and Sunday Nov 09 &10,2013
The Tropical Cyclone, known as 03A, hit the Eyl, Beyla, Dangorayo and Hafun districts along the eastern coast
Puntland's President Abdirahman Farole called for international help, saying the crisis was "immense". "Preliminary information also indicates that homes, buildings, boats and entire villages have been destroyed and over 100,000 livestock lost, endangering the livelihoods of tens of thousands of local people," the government said in a statement
Mohamed Aideed Dirir, Puntland's minister of planning told -
Electricity had been disrupted and mobile phone masts destroyed, making communication extremely difficult
more than 10 lorries loaded with food, water and blankets have been sent to the affected communities
Somalia's Govt has declared the North-Eastern Region of Puntland hit by a tropical cyclone at the weekend a disaster area. Declaring a disaster, Somalia's Interior Minister Abdikarim Hussein Guled said the central government pledged $1m (£628,000) to help communities devastated by the cyclone
