Indian-American Nisha Desai Biswal sworn In As US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Thursday Nov 21,2013



Indian-American Nisha Desai Biswal, the first ever Indian-American to become Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, was formally sworn in by Secretary of State John Kerry at an impressive ceremony held on Nov 21,2013 Thursday afternoon at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department which was attended by key officials of the Obama administration including the White House Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough


As the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal would be Mr. Obama’s point person for entire South and Central Asia — a region of the world, which John Kerry said is home to 2 billion people and has a collective GDP of $2 trillion.

Nisha Desai Biswal was the Assistant Administrator for Asia at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will step into the shoes of incumbent Robert Blake, and lead policymaking at the State Department for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. 

Current head of SCA Robert Blake said in a tweet on Friday morning, “Great News! @NishaBiswal has been officially nominated to be the next A/S for South and Central Asia.”

Nisha Desai Biswal has a B.A. from the University of Virginia, has served at USAID, headed by another Indian-American, Rajiv Shah, since September 2010has a B.A. from the University of Virginia, has served at USAID, headed by another Indian-American, Rajiv Shah, since September 2010
