Hawaii Senate by 19 votes to 4 Legalise Same-Sex Marriageon Tuesday Nov 12,2013
Hawaii's Democratic Governor indicated he would sign the bill into law without delay. It is expected to come into effect on December 02,2013
US President Barack Obama welcomed Tuesday's vote, saying: "I've always been proud to have been born in Hawaii, and today's vote makes me even prouder."
Same-sex marriages are currently legal 14 US states and the District of Columbia.The 14 States are -
- California
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Iowa
- Maine
- New Jersey
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Minnesota
- New Hampshire
- New York
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- Washington state, as well as in Washington DC
The remaining states do not legally sanction gay marriage, but laws vary greatly. Some states have civil union laws that grant couples most if not all of the rights and benefits of marriage.
Other states have passed bans or state constitutional amendments forbidding such unions.
