Golden Temple, Amritsar – the Sikh Shrine located at Punjab has been conferred the ‘Most Visited Place in the World’ 2017 by London based organization – World Book of Records (WBR). The holy place witnesses 1 lakh visitors daily that include people from different religions, backgrounds, and cultures.



The temple’s kitchen uses 12,000 kg flour, 1,500 kg rice, 13,000 kg lentils and 2,000 kg of vegetables every day to serve langar, where visitors savor Guru’s langar with equality seated on a common floor.

The place has four cardinal entrances that signify openness to all religions, to all people




5 Historical Facts to know about the Golden Temple is the most visited place in the World

1. Famously known as ‘Sri Harimandir Sahib’ which means the Temple of God; Golden Temple was founded by the 4th Sikh Guru - Sri Ram Dass ji in 1577, when he initiated digging the Amrit Sarovar (Ambrosial Pool). The city of Amritsar is named after this water reservoir.

2. It was in December, 1588 that the 5th Guru Sri Arjan Devi ji brick lined the complex and commenced the building of the Golden Temple Complex. The foundation stone of Harimandir Sahib was laid by sufi saint Mir Mohammed Muayyinul Islam popularly known as Hazrat Mian Mir in Sikh history.

3. In August, 1604 Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji – the Holy book of Sikhs, was first installed in the Golden Temple and Baba Budha Ji was the first Head Priest.

4. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is considered the 11th & Final Guru of Sikhs and is a compilation of religious teachings, hymns and praises of the Lord (One God) written not just by the Ten Gurus but also by various Hindu and Muslim saints.

5. In 1830, Maharaja Ranjit Singh renovated Harimandir Sahib and plated its domes with 100KG Gold, hereafter; the name Swarn Mandir or Golden Temple became prevalent.
