Australia dual citizenship row claims ninth politician

A ninth Australian parliamentarian will be unseated by a dual citizenship saga.

Senator Skye Kakoschke-Moore, from minor party the Nick Xenophon Team, has said she will resign after learning she inherited UK citizenship from her Singapore-born mother.

Australia's constitution bans federal politicians from having dual citizenship.

The saga has claimed the jobs of eight other politicians since July and cost the government its majority.

Ms Kakoschke-Moore said she had received "extremely surprising" advice from the UK Home Office last week after checking her citizenship details.

"It had been my understanding - my whole family's understanding - that I was ineligible for British citizenship," she told on Wednesday Nov 22,2017

Her resignation follows a High Court of Australia decision last month that clarified constitutional rules and determined five politicians to be ineligible.

The four others have since resigned without contesting their cases.

Under mounting pressure to resolve the saga, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced earlier this month that all politicians would be required to make a declaration about their citizenship status.

The government has since set a deadline of December 05,2017

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull could regain his one-seat majority in the House of Representatives if two of his candidates, including former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, win by-elections in December.
