2017 RK Nagar By-Poll - Election Commission of India(ECI) Announces Poll Dates Friday Nov 24,2017

The bypoll to RK Nagar constituency, which fell vacant following J Jayalalithaa’s death last year, will be held on December 21,2017 and the votes will be counted on December 24, the Election Commission of India(ECI)announced on Friday.

Nominations could be filed till December 4, and their scrutiny would take place the next day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations would be up to December 7.

Electronic voting machines (EVM) with Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) will be used in all the four constituencies. The model code of conduct comes into effect from Friday.

The bypoll will be a fight for Jayalalithaa’s legacy between Dinakaran, the nephew of her jailed confidante Sasikala, and the merged E Palaniswami-O Panneerselvam factions

The EPS-OPS camp has already claimed first victory in the fight with the Election Commission awarding it the party’s 'two leaves' symbol.

The RK Nagar bypoll was previously scheduled for April 12, but cancelled by the Election Commission following allegations of voter bribery. Raids at the premises of Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar’s associates had revealed the routing of Rs 89 crore for "distribution to voters" in Assembly segment.

The amount was allegedly channelled through many party functionaries for distribution to voters

The RK Nagar by-poll was announced as part of by-election to constituencies in states, including Arunachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Four more Assembly constituencies in three States – Uttar Pradesh (Sikandra constituency), Arunachal Pradesh (Pakke-Kasang and Likbali) and West Bengal (Sabang) would also be held on the same day
