Dev Anand - 'Evergreen Romantic Superstar' of Hindi Cinema









Dharam Dev Anand (born September 26, 1923), better known as Dev Anand  is an Indian Hindi Cinema Actor;director and film producer.  Dev Anand is the second of three brothers - Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand.
Their Sister,Sheel Kanta Kapur, is the mother of renowned Hindi and English film director,Shekhar Kapur.


Acting Career

Dev Anand made his debut in Hum Ek Hain(1946) starring Dev Anand'Guru Dutt and Kamala Kotnis 















Dev Anand's 1st big break came through Ashok Kumar who picked him as the hero for the Bombay Talkies  production, Ziddi(1948) , costarring Kamini Kaushal  which became an instant success.
In 1949, Dev Anand turned producer and launched his own company Navketan (which mean newness), which till 2011 has produced 31 films.
Baazi(1951)starring Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and directed by Guru Dutt was a trendsetter and regarded as the forerunner of the spate of urban crime films that followed in Bollywood in the 1950s.

 Dev Anand and singer-actress Suraiya were paired in six films together — Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951)
 Dev Anand andSuraiya fell in love butSuraiya's maternal grandmother opposed the relationship as they were Muslim and Dev Anand Hindu, and so, Suraiya remained unmarried all her life.

Dev Anand also acted in films of tragic genre like -
Pocket Maar(1956);Kala Pani(1958);Bombay Ka Babu(1960) and Sharabi(1964) which were successful at the box office.
                                                                                                                  

                
From the early 50s till mid 60s, the trio of Dilip Kumar;Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand were the topstars of Hindi Cinema.

Dev Anand's 1st Color Film Guide(1965) directed by younger brother Vijay Anand was an Indo-US co-production that was shot in Hindi and English simultaneously and the film received success both at the box office and from the filmcritics.The novel story alongwith SD Burman's haunting music made it one of the masterpieces of Indian cinema.
                                               
   














Later, a 120-minute US version of the film was made with additional directing and writing, which was produced by Tad Danielewski. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, about 42 years after its release.

Dev Anand's 1st directorial debut film was ''Prem Pujari(1970) which was a flop at the boxoffice.The movie also made Hema Malini a big star.


 











Hare Rama Hare Krishna(1971) directed by Dev Anand with Mumtaz as the leading lady and Zeenat Aman who played a westernized  hippie was a hit at the boxoffice.The film made Zenat Aman  an overnight sensation and big star and won the Filmfare Award - Best Supporting Actress  



















Banarsi Babu(1973) Dev Anand Starred with Rakhee and Yogeeta Bali and the film was a commercial hit




  


Heera Panna(1973) produced and directed by Dev Anand starring Zeenat Aman and Rakhee was a hit film

  


Chhupa Rustam(1973) produced and directed by Vijay Anand starring DevAnand paired with Hema Malini

Dev Anand's Direction and Production of Hindi Films
Dev Anand has directed 19 films and produced 31 films of which 7 directorial ventures and 18 films respectively were commercially successful at the box office




In September 2007, Dev's own autobiography ''Romancing with life" was released at a birthday party with the Indian PM ManMohan Singh.

                                         







In February 2011, his black and white film Hum Dono(1961) was digitised and colourised and released.


Dev Anand and Marriage


Dev Anand is married to Kalpana Kartik (original name Mona Singh) is a former Hindi film actress who starred in 5 films in the 1950s -

all the films were big hits. During the making of Taxi Driver, the couple fell in love and Dev proposed marriage to Kalpana. They married in a secret ceremony in 1954 and the couple have two children —a son, Suneil and a daughter Devina.

Dev Anand and Suraiya were paired in six films together -Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair(1949), Afsar(1950), Nili(1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam(1951), which were all successful at the box office.
Dev Anand fell in love with Suraiya and proposed to Suraiya.However,Suraiya's maternal grandmother opposed the relationship as they were Muslim and Dev Anand Hindu, and so, Suraiya remained unmarried all her life.They stopped acting together after her grandmother opposed and Do Sitare was the last film of the pair to release


Dev Anand and politics

Dev Anand has  been politically active and opposed 'Emergency'imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975.
Dev Anand in the 1977 parliamentary elections campaigned against Indira Gandhi with his supporters.
Dev Anand also formed a party called the 'National Party of India', which he later disbanded.

For the film Kala Pani(1958) Dev Anand won his 1st Filmfare Award for Best Actor


Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award(1991)
GOI honoured him with Padma Bhushan(2001) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award(2002)


 Dev Anand Passes Away (September 26, 1923 - December 03,2011) 

Dev Anand died in London on Saturday Night December 03,2011 following a Cardiac Arrest
