World's first atomic bomb was detonated by the United States on July
16, 1945, approximately 60 miles north of White Sands National Monument
in New Mexico.
The project was named Trinity project and took place at White Sands National Monument of the northern Chihuahuan Desert.
The nuke device known as the "Gadget" was detonated at 5:30 am. Placed on a 100-foot steel tower, Gadget's nearest observation point was 5.7 miles away from Ground Zero (designated at the foot of the tower).
The observers watched the atomic test through dark glasses due to safety measures. A 38,000-feet-high multi-coloured cloud rose above in the sky within seven minutes of the detonation.
An eight-feet-deep and one-half mile crater was created under the tower. A material named trinitite took birth (glass-like solid with a green jade colour) after the fusion and intense heat.
The shock waves of the test spread to a radius of 160 miles.
