Celebrities Hit By Twitter Purge

In order to build trust and encourage healthy conversation after it faced global scrutiny for its fake and spam accounts, micro blogging site Twitter removed accounts locked due to suspected fraud from follower-count tallies.

The activity was undertaken between July 11 and July 12, 2018, and resulted in a decline in the number of followers of many users—including the likes of former US president Barack Obama, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. Pop star Katy Perry, who has the most followed account on Twitter lost 2.8 million followers.

In last two months, Twitter has purged 70 million accounts from its platform, translating to more than 1 million accounts per day.

However, this news sent its investors into tizzy on concerns about slowing user growth and dragged down its stock.

On July 9, 2018, Twitter stock price dropped 5.4 per cent to $44.14.
