Shattering the hopes of key parties including DMK and BJP, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief Vijayakanth said on Thursday March 10,2016 that his party would go alone in the May 16,2016 Assembly polls.

Vijayakanth, in a public meeting here, said
“We are going to contest alone in the Assembly polls.”

The actor-turned politician also said he has formed a seven member committee which would meet on Friday onwards to select candidates for all the 234 constituencies.

Thanking all the parties including the DMK and the BJP for inviting him for a poll tie-up, Vijayakanth also said his party will be an alternative to the two major Dravidian parties — AIADMK and DMK. In a recent meeting with party workers, Vijayakanth announced that he wanted to be ‘king’ rather than ‘kingmaker’

The numbers are definitely not on his side. Still, he has risked everything that he has got and as a strategy, through his wife Premalatha, he has asked “like-minded outfits” to approach his party.

Note

Launched in September 2005, the DMDK contested the 2006 Assembly elections alone and secured over 8 % vote share.

This went up to 10.3 % in 2009 Parliamentary elections.

In 2011, the party aligned with the AIADMK and won 29 seats, making it the main opposition in the Assembly.
