Thomas Bach(Germany) Elected AS IOC President Tuesday Sep 10,2013



Germany's Thomas Bach was elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday Sep 10,2013 succeeding Jacques Rogge(Belgium)


Thomas Bach,the first Olympic Champion(1976 Montreal Olympics Fencing Gold Medalist) to head the IOC, is the 9thpresident  in the body's 119-year history and the 8th European IOC leader(Avery Brundage of the United States was the only outsider to break the monopoly, heading the IOC from 1952-1972)


Thomas Bach(Germany) secured victory in the second round of voting, polling 49 of the available 93 votes and beating Richard Carrion(Puerto Rica) into second place with 29 votes


In the first round, Bach got 43 votes, followed by Carrion with 23, Bubka eight, Oswald seven and Ng and Wu six each. Ng then beat Wu 56-36 in a runoff 
A former Olympic fencing gold medalist who heads Germany's national Olympic committee, Bach becomes the ninth president in the 119-year history of the IOC. He is the eighth European to hold the presidency.
