2013 Orissa Urban Local Bodies Election Thursday Sep 19,2013


The Ruling Biju Janata Dal(BJD) led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has performed well in the elections held in the 66Urban Local Bodies(ULB) in the State

Of the 65 Urban Local Bodies(ULB) for which results were announced after counting of the votes on Friday Sep 20,2013 -

  • BJD secured a majority in as many as 41 ULBs
  • Congress won a majority in 10 ULBs
  • Independents won a majority 2 ULBs 
  • No clear majority in 12 ULB's

Out of the total number of 1121 wards the results of which were announced by the State Election Commission -

  • BJD won 642 
  • Congress won 318
  • BJP won 47
  • Independents won 101 and 
  • Others won 10

The BJD achieved success despite the party chief fighting the polls without his one-time trusted lieutenant Pyarimohan Mohapatra who had since formed a regional political outfit

Congress Party managed to perform well in many ULBs under the leadership of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Jayadev Jena, who had been facing non-cooperation from several of the senior leaders of his party since his recent appointment as PCC chief

BJP failed to secure a majority in any of the 65 ULBs as it fared badly in the polls

The State Election Commission (SEC) announced Thursday Sep19,2013 for holding elections to 91 ULBs comprising 1,569 wards


The nomination process for the polls from August 20,2013

The Ruling BJD Party has constituted an 11-member state-level committee featuring three senior ministers besides leaders from the youth and women wings of the party


Opposition Congress Party has appointed observers for the 32 organisational committees, who will discharge the responsibility of naming the candidates


BJP is also geared up for the municipal polls

“The selection process of candidates will be complete by August 16-August 17,” BJP president K V Singhdeo said.
For the first time, 50% seats will be reserved for women candidates while SEBC candidates will enjoy 27% quota.
The nomination process will end on August 24,2013

No urban polls in 9 western Odisha districts on Sept 19,2013

Even as ongoing agitation demanding a permanent bench of Orissa High Court disrupted nomination process for forthcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in western Odisha, the State Election Commission (SEC) today decided not to hold the polls in 9 districts of the region on the pre-scheduled date – September 19.
The districts, where the nomination process took a hit after political parties boycotted the ensuing elections supporting the lawyers’ stir, are -
  • Sambalpur
  • Bolangir
  • Bargarh
  • Nuapada
  • Subarnapur
  • Jharsuguda
  • Debagarh
  • Kalahandi and
  • Sundargarh.
Chief Election Commissioner Ajit Kumar Tripathy said new dates for holding the elections in these districts would be announced after receiving reports from respective collectors.
Official sources said not a single nomination paper was filed in 20 ULBs in nine districts. At least six districts including Balangir, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Nuapada, Sambalpur and Sonepur reported a complete boycott of nomination process.
