A riot at the Uribana prison in Barquisimeto in western Venezuela left 50 people dead and dozens injured.Clashes erupted on Friday Jan 25,2013after local media reported about a planned operation to disarm prisoners at the facility in Uribana, the prison ministry said
The newspaper Ultimas Noticias reported on its website that 54 were killed. The television channel Globovision reported at least 50 killed and about 90 injured. Both cited Ruy Medina, the director of Central Hospital in the city.
The violence involved both a struggle between rival gangs for control of the jail and a confrontation between inmates and troops called in to calm the situation,Prisons Minister Iris Varela said.
Venezuelan prisons are controlled by armed gangs that have rioted repeatedly over the last several years due to disputes with jail authorities or prison leaders.
Vice President Nicolas Maduro called the violence tragic early Saturday Jan 26,2013 on TV and said the authorities had launched an investigation.
