After the 3-0 win against Australia in the 3- Match T20 Series few days back, world No.1 India were outplayed at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune as Sri Lanka registered a comfortable five-wicket win in the first Twenty20 international.
Put into bat first on a green pitch, Indian batsmen fell like pack of cards from the word go. It all started when pacer Rajitha picked up in-form Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane in the first over.Rohit Sharma (0) miscued his shot and Dushmantha Chameera took a superb catch at mid-off. Rahane (4) fell on the last ball of the same over when he attempted to clip a ball to leg but only managed a leading edge to get caught at short extra-cover
India could have been three down inside three overs but Suresh Raina was dropped by Danushka Gunathilaka at third man.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan then tried to take the attack to the opposition and hit one out of the park but his stay did not last long as Rajitha got his third wicket when he forced a thick edge off the left-hander which flew to third man and Gunathilaka did not made any mistake this time.
With India three wickets down, Raina and Yuvraj Singh were looking to give some stability to the team but both were dismissed in the process.
Suresh Raina hit a six and a four in his innings but soon Shanaka cleaned him up for 20. Shanaka then picked up another one in the same over when he got better off skipper MS Dhoni (2) - who top edged one to the wicketkeeper trying to play a hook shot.
Things went from bad to worse for India when Yuvraj, after being hit on the side of the helmet off the previous ball, tried to heave it to leg but put up a tame return catch to Dushmantha Chameera. Yuvraj, who did not get to bat much in Australia, marked his entry with a step-out straight six against offspinner Sachithra Senanayake but was not able to make most of the chance he got and scored only 10 runs from 14 balls.
Shanaka scalped his third by trapping Hardik Pandya as India slumped to 58 for 7 after 11 overs. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja was then trapped leg before by Senanayake and it was looking like India will beat their own record-low of 74 in T20Is.
R Ashwin kept a few runs coming for India lower down the order and scored 31 not out and helped India go past the 100-run mark. His ninth wicket stand off 28 balls with Ashish Nehra (6) was also the best partnership of the innings.
Debutant Kasun Rajitha and 24-year-old Dasun Shanaka picked up three wickets each and captain Dinesh Chandimal made a crucial run-a-ball 35 as Sri Lankans reached the target of 102 in 18 overs to take 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20 series
Chasing a low total for 102 runs to win, SL didn't have a good start as Ashish Nehra dismissed Niroshan Dickwella (4) in the first over and then Danushka Gunathilaka (9) in the fifth over to give India a slight hopw. However, Chamara Kapugedera (25)and Chandimal had a 39-run stand for the third wicket to steady the Sri Lankan innings.
For India, Ashish Nehra (2/21 in 3 overs) and Ashwin (2/13 in 3 overs) got a couple of wickets each
