hopeful one and was expected to bring back the 'acche din' of the Indian
railways.
In his maiden budget, Suresh Prabhu shunned populist measures and the budget was hailed to be far more realistic.
The NDA Government announced steps to slowly and gradually rebuild railway infrastructure in many ways
As we head towards another railway budget by the NDA Govt led by Narendra Modi, here's a report card of how well and how sad has the government's performance been in this year
Bullet Trains: In the run-up to the Lok-Sabha elections in 2014, PM Modi promised to bring bullet trains to India. Soon after Narendra Modi led BJP was voted to power, India signed a deal with Japan for the execution of the plan. The deal was signed between the two countries for the project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad which is expected to cut short the travel duration between the two cities by six hours.
The luxurious and superfast 'Mahamana express' : Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the swanky and superfast train connecting Delhi and Varanasi January 22,2016. It was called the Mahamana Express, which will cover the distance between the two cities in 14 hours. The train had all its coaches equipped with many modern facilities including TVs and some basic needs like odour control system, exhaust fans and dustbins in the toilets.
Free Wi-Fi and better facilities: In a bid to upgrade the travel experience in the Indian railways, last years budget saw many reforms being initiated including free wi-fi and better food facilities. The free Wi-Fi project is among the world’s largest and has the internet giant Google linked to us. Google partnered with RailTel, Indian Railways’ telecom wing, which had laid out a 45,000km of optic fibre network across the country.
Going Eco-Friendly: In another measure to ensure better practices, some eco-friendly measures were also introduced in 2015. Indian Railways launched a CNG-operated train on the Rewari-Rohtak route and also tested solar panel-operated coaches on a Rewari-Sitapur passenger train. The cost of installing the panels was expected to save the railways over Rs1.24 lakh per year
Generated 66,456 berths by augmenting 884 coaches on the permanent basis including 390 general second class unreserved coaches.
Installation of 2500 water vending machines on the railway stations.
