Indian pacer Ishant Sharma and Sri Lankan trio of Dhammika Prasad,
Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have been charged by the
International Cricket Council (ICC) for a heated exchange during the
fourth day of the ongoing third Test in Colombo.
"Dinesh Chandimal, Ishant Sharma, Lahiru Thirimanne & Dhammika Prasad charged for breaching ICC Code of Conduct. Details to be announced after the conclusion of the Test," the apex cricket body tweeted on Tuesday, confirming that the quantum of punishment will be declared at the end of the third and decisive Test
Ishant Sharma had been charged 65 per cent of his match-fees as he gave send-offs to the Sri Lankan batsmen in the second Test played at the P Sara Oval, which seemed to be the stage from where he started getting under the skin of Sri Lankan team. But things got uglier in the fourth Test.
The current exchange of animosity started on day three of the ongoing match when Prasad tried to block Ishant's bouncer off the first ball he faced during Sri Lanka's second innings. The ball hit his left hand so hard that the Sri Lankan retired hurt before returning to see out his innings in pain
Dhammika Prasad, trying to take revenge, bowled a few bouncers at Ishant when India were batting on the penultimate day of the Test, but the deliveries barely troubled the tall Indian fast bowler. Ishant got a chance to take a single and while crossing Prasad gestured him to try and go for his head, which seemed to annoy the Sri Lankan who retaliated with equal animosity.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who was with Ishant at the crease, also joined in to object the way Prasad continuously bowled bouncers at Ishant. Ultimately, the umpires had to intervene but home skipper Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath seemed to be arguing their case based on what happened in the first innings.
Interestingly, after the incident on Monday - which ended with the last wicket of India's second innings - Ishant ran off the field to get ready to bowl and Prasad sprinted right behind him following the Indian on the staircase leading to the two dressing rooms.
Ishant Sharma took a five-wicket haul in Sri Lanka's first innings, which allowed India to take control of the match with a 111-run lead.
Ishant Sharma was suspended for one Test match for breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct during the third cricket Test against Sri Lanka where he got into repeated altercations with opposition players on Tuesday Sep 01,2015
This was the third time that Ishant Sharma been found guilty of giving the dismissed batsman a send off during this series.
Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal has been handed a suspension sentence of one ODI for making deliberate physical contact with Ishant while Lahiru Thirimanne and Dhammika Prasad were fined 50 percent of their match fees
