India at the Olympics

 
 India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete Norman Pritchard(born in Calcutta to British parentsGeorge Petersen Pritchard and Helen Maynard Pritchard) winning two medals- both silver- in 200 Metres and 200 Metres Hurdles

The nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920, and has participated in every Summer Games since then

 For a period of time,Indian National Hockey Team was dominant in Olympic competition, winning eleven medals in twelve Olympics between 1928 and 1980 which  included 8 gold medals total and six successive gold medals from 1928–1956

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, India won its first ever individual gold medal when Abhinav Bindra won the 10m air rifle event

Sushil Kumar(66 kg freestyle wrestling) became the 1st Indian to win more than one Olympic Medal when he won -
Bronze Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic and
Silver Medal at the 2012 London Olympics

2012 London Olympics was India's most successful Olympics in terms of total medal tally, having won a total of 6 medals (2 silver and 4 bronze), doubling the nation's previous record (3 medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics)
