2015 Togolese Presidential Election Saturday April 25,2015

 

The Presidential elections is scheduled to be held in Togo on Saturday April 25,2015

Initially scheduled for 15 April 2015, Togo's 2015 election was later moved 10 days later at the recommendation of John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana and acting chair of the ECOWAS Organization.

Incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe will be seeking a third term and

will face four other candidates, including the main opposition leader Jean Pierre Fabre of the National Alliance for Change

Faure Gnassingbe(48)has been in power since the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, in 2005, winning contested elections that year and five years later

Some 3.5 million of Togo`s seven million people are registered to vote

Polling stations in the tiny West African nation open at 0700 GMT, with some 9,000 police and soldiers on patrol, and with borders shut until Sunday morning for security reasons

More than 1,200 election observers, including from the West African bloc ECOWAS, the African Union and Togolese civil society, will be on hand to monitor voting.

The Govt announced the closure of land borders from 2100 GMT on Friday until 0600 GMT on Sunday "to ensure optimal security conditions" for the elections
