After 25 years of togetherness, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena are parting ways in Maharashtra.
On Thursday evening Sep 25,2014, BJP state unit chief Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement that the party is snapping ties with the Sena in the face of a deadlock over seat-sharing for the October 15,2014 assembly elections

For days the BJP and Sena, along with the smaller allies - Republican Party of India, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and Shiv Sangram - have been trying to save the alliance. However, with the Sena not agreeing to contest in less than 151 Assembly seats - thereby reducing the seat share of BJP and other parties - the logjam continued.
Ultimately, the BJP decided to snap ties with the Sena. Thursday's announcement came , besides phone calls between Fadnavis and Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray during the day.
Finally, at its core committee meeting in the evening the BJP arrived at the decision. Fadnavis, senior BJP leaders Eknath Khadse and Vinod Tawade, along with Mahadev Jankar of the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha jointly made the announcement.
"The Mahayuti without the Shiv Sena
will contest the polls. We will not target or criticise the Shiv Sena
during the campaign and remain friends," Fadnavis said.
However, the parties accused the Sena of being adamant by keeping 151 seats for itself, of eyeing the Chief Minister's post, and of ignoring the greater good of the state.
The BJP leaders also said that the Sena's attitude and the speculation over the alliance were leading to a situation of great mistrust for the four smaller allies.
The BJP also said that the uncertainty and speculation in the past few weeks was giving undue advantages to NCP and Congress.
