2013 Delhi Assembly Election Polling Wed Dec 04,2013


Delhi goes to polls today Wed Dec 04,2013 to choose between three-time chief minister Sheila Dikshit and her main challengers - BJP's doctor-politician Harsh Vardhan and anti-corruption campaigner Arvind Kejriwal, a debutant hoping to dent the fortunes of the two political behemoths.


Nearly 12 million or 1.2 crore residents of the capital are eligible to vote for the 70-member Delhi Assembly.
810 candidates are in the fray in the three-cornered contest between Congress, BJP and AAP
BJP has fielded candidates in 66 constituencies
Congress and AAP are contesting from all 70 seats. 
BSP has fielded candidates in 69 seats
A total of 224 independents are also in the fray
There are 11,753 polling booths out of which 630 have been identified as critical and hyper critical
 
Delhi turned up in record numbers on Wednesday to vote for its next government. The voting ended at around 8:30 pm with a record voter turnout of 67%

So far, Delhi's biggest voter turnout was 61.75 % in 1993. In the last state election in 2008, the voter turnout was 58%

Voters came out in large numbers, some even using walking sticks and crutches as they headed for their polling booth


At 75, Sheila Dikshit of Congress is fighting for a record fourth term. "I am too grown-up to be nervous. I will keep my fingers crossed," she said at a polling booth where she cast her vote along with her Congress party's president Sonia Gandhi.


The BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan is an E.N.T surgeon and former Health Minister hoping to re-establish his party in the saddle after 15 long years.

"Please vote, then eat," advised AAP's Arvind Kejriwal, who was among the early voters today. He came with some 100 supporters, wearing white Gandhi caps which, along with the broom, is the fledgling party's trademark
