Rabindra Nath Tagore(May 07,1861 - Aug 07,1941)

  

 Rabindranath was born to Debendranath Tagore(1817–1905) and Saradha Devi(1830–1875),a Pirali Brahmin from Kolkata

Rabindranath Tagore(May 07,1861 - Aug 07,1941) was a Bengali Polymath(a person whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas)

Rabindranath Tagore's  poetry was viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal

Rabindranath Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali Literature thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit

Rabindranath Tagore was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of modern South Asia

Rabindranath established Santiniketan near Bolpur in the Birbhum District of West Bengal which now a university town (Viswa Bhatathi University) that attracts thousands of visitors each year

 Rabindra Nath Tagore’s song - ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was first performed on December 27, 1911, at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress, which was then a national movement against British rule, not a political party. It was written in Sanskritized Bengali.


'Jana Gana Mana' was selected as the national anthem of India in 1950 after considerable debate, overruled Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s popular Bengali song Vande Mataram in the face of Muslim opposition.
Awards and Honours

had won the Nobel Prize in Literature in the year 1913
On 25 March 2004, Tagore's Nobel Prize was stolen from the safety vault of the Visva-Bharati University, along with several other of his belongings.
On 7 December 2004, the Swedish Academy decided to present two replicas of Tagore's Nobel Prize, one made of gold and the other made of bronze, to the Visva Bharati University

In 1915, the British Crown granted Tagore a knighthood which he renounced it after the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
