As tens of thousands in communities from Ontario to the Maritimes faced the possibility of a Christmas without power, officials issued an urgent warning for residents to guard against carbon monoxide poisoning in their attempts to stay warm.

The call came as temperatures dropped along the path of a nasty storm which had downed power lines, left trees and roads covered in ice and caused widespread travel delays since the weekend.
"It's really cold, so that's why the concern arises,'' Environment Canada meteorologist Marie-Eve Giguere said of the warning that was being sounded Tuesday Dec 24,2013 in communities where some were in their third full day without power

Much of southern Ontario and southern Quebec experienced temperatures between -15 and -20, with the mercury expected to drop further through the night. Parts of the Maritimes that had been hit by the ice storm on Monday weren't quite as cold, but still experienced temperatures below zero

More than 24,000 Quebec households and businesses are into their fourth day without power, almost all in the Eastern Townships and Montérégie regions of the province.
Hydro-Québec says customers in the areas hardest hit by an ice storm that swept through parts Ontario and Quebec Saturday might only see power restored late in the evening of December 25.
