Silvio Berlusconi Resigns as Italian Prime Minister


Italy's lower house of parliament on Saturday 12.11.2011 passed the austerity measures demanded by the European Union (EU), a day after the Italian Senate approved the package aimed to stave off bankruptcy(Italy's state debt stands at about 1.9 trillion euros - $2.6 trillion), paving the way for the resignation of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the formation of a new government.Silvio Berlusconi's resignation was set in motion after the chamber of deputies, with a vote of 380-26 with two abstentions, approved economic reforms,
Silvio Berlusconi Italy's PM of 17 years, resigned on Saturday after parliament's lower chamber passed European-demanded reforms, ending a political era and setting in motion a transition aimed at bringing the country back from the brink of economic crisis. Amid a chorus of "alleluia" and chants of "buffoon, buffoon" and celebrations in downtown Rome, Berlusconi's motorcade entered and exited the presidential palace where the 75-year-old billionaire Media Magnate tendered his resignation to Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano.

Silvio Berlusconi is currently a defendant in three trials for bribery, tax fraud, abuse of power and paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl.

Silvio Berlusconi has resigned as Italy's longest-serving post-war PM and 3rd longest serving since the creation of Italy after Benito Mussolini(as PM from October 1922 to December 1925 and as Head of State of Italy from December 1925 to July 1943) and Giovanni Giolitti(PM between 1892-1921) bringing to an end a tumultuous, 17-year political career which was marred by sex scandals, corruption allegations and gaffes on the international stage.

In March1994 teaming with anti-immigrant ally Umberto Bossi in a center-right coalition, he wins parliamentary elections, becoming premier a month later

In December 1994 Umberto Bossi yanks his party out of the coalition, forcing Berlusconi's resignation.

In April 1996 Berlusconi loses parliamentary elections to a center-left coalition led by Romano Prodi and remains as the head of the opposition while fighting judicial probes into his business empire.

 In May 2001 Berlusconi wins national elections after pledging to cut taxes, create jobs and improve the country's infrastructure

 In April 2006 Berlusconi loses election to RomanoProdi in one of Italy's closest votes. Refusing to concede defeat, alleges irregularities

 In April 2008 Silvio Berlusconi scores a decisive victory over center-left leader Walter Veltroni in parliamentary elections to win a 3rd term as premier

 In February 2011 Silvio Berlusconi is indicted by a Milan court on charges he paid an underage girl for sex and used his office to try to cover it up.

 Silvio Berlusconi's Career

Silvio Berlusconi was born in Milan in 1936, and studied law in Milan, graduating in 1961. He occasionally performed as a cruise ship crooner, and later recorded two albums.After starting his career in construction, he set up a small TV company 'Telemilano' in 1973.In 1978 Berlusconi founded his first media group 'Fininvest'.Fininvest soon expanded into a country-wide network of local TV stations which had similar programming, forming, in effect, a single national network.In 1980, Berlusconi founded Italy's first private national network 'Canale 5 ' and had a vast media network by the mid-80s.Silvio Berlusconi said to be Italy's richest man who controls much of Italian print and television media.
In March 1994 SB won the general elections heading a party called 'Forza Italia'(Go Italy in English) a chant used by AC Milan Football Club fans.Berlusconi's first tenure as Prime Minister collapsed seven months after he was appointed to the position in 1994.Berlusconi made no effort to hide his admiration of the fairer sex.

Silvio Berlusconi named Angelino Alfano, a 41-year-old former justice minister who became the leader of the ruling People of Freedom (PDL) party this year, as his replacement for elections and said there should be a vote in February 2012.

Mario Monti asked to form new Italian government 

 

Mario Monti (former EU commissioner) a 68-year-old technocrat considered the veritable "anti-Berlusconi" was named interim prime minister by President Giorgio Napolitano on sunday 13.11.2011 to pull Italy  back from the brink of a full-blown debt crisis and effectively charging him with the task of bringing Italy’s bickering political parties together behind a new transitional government.Italian PM Mario Monti insisted that he intended to govern until elections in 2013
                                                                                













Italy's new technocrat prime minister, Mario Monti who enjoys 75 percent support according to opinion polls, comfortably won a vote of confidence in his new government in the Senate(upper house of parliament) on Thursday Nov 17,2011, by 281 votes to 25.


Italian PM Mario Monti's Cabinet won a 2nd confidence vote 556-61 for Monti's government in the lower house of parliament on Friday Nov 18,2011 to secure its right to tackle the country's deepening financial crisis.
