Suriya - சூர்யா(actor)

Suriya (DOB July 23, 1975 as Saravanan Sivakumar) made his Tamil Film Debut in 'Nerrukku Ner'(1997)Directed by Vasanth and Produced by Director Maniratnam.

Surya's first breakthrough came in ' Nandha'(2002)directed by Bala

and followed by Director Amir's 'Mounam Pesiyadhe'(2002)

Director Gautam Menon's 'Kaakha Kaakha'(2003) a film about the life of a police officer Anbu Selvan (Suriya)which made him a performing actor as well as commerically successful hero

Director Bala's 'Pithamagan'(2003) gave him appreciation from all (for the performance as a talkative live Sakthi(Suriya) contrary to his personal nature).'Pithamagan' won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2003.

 Perazhagan(2004) directed  by Sasi Shanker starring Suriya and Jyotika in lead roles with both playing dual roles received acclaim for his performance as a 'hunchback'.This is the 1st film where Suriya plays a dual role.the film won him the Best Actor - Filmfare Award in 2004

Aayutha Ezhuthu(2004) a political film directed by Mani Ratnam stars Suriya,Madhavan and Siddharth in the lead roles.The title of the movie is the name of a Tamil Alphabet letter, , represented by three dots as the film deals with three different personalities from completely different strata of society. The film calls for the involvement of the youth in the nation's highest decision making processes. The movie was simultaneously made in Hindi as Yuva.

His performance in 'Ghajini'(2005) directed by A R Murgadoss,was very much appreciated for his performance in the character played  as a patient suffering from short-term memory loss.

 Aaru(2005) an action masala film directed by Hari with Trisha playing the female lead received only a moderate response at the box office

Sillunu Oru Kaadhal(2006) starring opposite Jyothika and Bhumika was a hit and become all time favorite for the youth.

Vel(2007) was his first action -drama  and double action film directed by Hari,which released for Diwali  become an super- hit film

Vaaranam Aayiram(2008)a romantic-drama film directed by Gautam Menon.Suriya playing dual roles for the 2nd time in his career(appeared as father and son) with both characters also demanding scenes shot throughout their lives ranging from scenes as a 16 year old to scenes as a 65 year old.During the production of the film, Suriya described the project as "unique" and "straight from the heart", describing the physical hardships he endured during the making.He lost weight and prepared a 6-pack for the film through an 8 month fitness regime, with the move being a trendsetter for other leading actors from South India.The film which also featured Simran,Sameera Reddy and Divya Spandana in prominent roles, became commercially successful at the box office upon release as well as receiving positive reviews from film critics, with Suriya's performance being lauded.                       
 The film won him the Best Actor -Filmfare Award in 2008

K V Anand's 'Ayan'(2009) an action-thriller become the highest grossing Tamil film of the year.With Suriya portraying the role of a smuggler, the film also featured Prabhu  as his guardian and Tamannaah as the lead actress. The film was shot extensively across Tanzania, Namibia, Malaysia and India and featured stunts by Suriya, without the use of a stunt double.he film's success saw Suriya emerge as the most profitable leading actor in Tamil films, following a hat trick of large commercial hits.

Aadhavan(2009) an action thriller duly supported by Vadivelu's comedy,directed by K S Rvikumar released as a Diwali bonanza for Surya's fans was a box-office hit again for Suriya.

Singam(2010) an action film directed by Hari in which Suriya portrayed the role of a Police Officer to perfection with Anushka as his leading lady went on to become the 2nd highest grossing film of the year(Superstar Rajnikant's Enthiran being the highest collection of the year).'Singam' was Suriya's 25th film.

Suriya made his Bollywood debut in Ram Gopal Varma's two-part political drama Rakta Charitra(2010).
The film is a two-part Indian biographical based on the life of  'Paritala Ravindra'.The film features Vivek Oberoi as Ravindra in the lead role, whilst Suriya plays as Suri, who predominantly appears in the second part.The film was released in three different languages - Telegu;Hindi and Tamil.The Telugu and Hindi versions were released in two parts, six weeks apart, while the Tamil version was released as a single film

''the effort of Murugadoss to make a special kind of film is laudable but seems to lack the imagination required to pull off what he set out to achieve"
"technical finesse catering to commercial compulsions"
"a hopeful beginning makes this routine fare an absolute disappointment. This is not a bad film. You just expect better from a director like Murugadoss"
