Match Result - Pakistan won by 14 Runs
MOM - Mohammad Hafeez(Pakistan)for his 84(62 Balls 4x8 and 6x2)
Pakistan's total of 348/8 was built around solid top-order contributions from Openers Imam ul Haq 44(58 Balls 4x3 and 6x1)and Fakhar Zaman (36(40 Balls 4x6)who added 82 Runs and Babar Azam 63(66 Balls 4x4 and 6x1),Mohammad Hafeez 84(62 Balls 4x8 and 6x2)and Sarfaraz Ahmed 55(44 Balls 4x5)
The stand between Joe Root and Jos Buttler of 130 in 17.3 overs, England had the
air of warm favourites (despite history and mathematics remaining firmly
against them). That lifted England from the travails of 118 for 4, with
both openers falling inside the Powerplay and Pakistan's part-time spin
pairing of Hafeez and Shoaib Malik accounting for the in-form Eoin
Morgan and Ben Stokes.
Having opened so smoothly against South Africa, England were given a
World Cup reality check - a reminder, in particular, that their vaunted
batting line-up cannot make up for every sub-par performance with
the ball. It had been almost four years since England last lost an ODI
chase at home, but this was a record target in World Cups and despite
going into the last ten overs needing 91 with five wickets in hand,
Pakistan's death bowling was good enough that the final dozen deliveries
were barely even squeaky.
Joe Root's century 107(104 Balls 4x10 and 6x1)was the first in the 2019 CWC and his 15th ODI Ton
Jos Butler's century103(76 Balls 4x9 and 6x2) ,at 75 balls the fifth fastest in the history of CWC
Match Highlights
Pakistan posted a mammoth total of 348 for eight in their stipulated 50
overs after being asked to bat first. It was their second-highest total
in the World Cup as well as the highest World Cup total posted by a team
without a century. Notably, Pakistan posted their lowest-ever World Cup
total of 105 in their opening match against West Indies
Joe Root struck a blistering 107-run knock, including 10 boundaries and
one six, off just 104 balls. This was the first century of the 2019
edition of the World Cup and his 15th ODI ton overall
Jos Buttler smashed a 76-ball 103 runs, laced with nine boundaries and
two sixes. His ton off just 75 balls was by far England's fastest World
Cup ton.
