What is a Haboob?

These walls of dust can stretch up to 100km wide and at their strongest can travel at speeds of 35 - 100km/h.

They are caused when a downburst of cool air reaches the ground, blowing loose dry silt, clay and dust to form a storm cloud.

Haboobs are common in the Sarah desert, as well as Arizona, Texas, Australia, Central Asia and China.

The word Haboob stems from the word 'habb' the Arabic word for 'wind'.
