Home to more than 80% of land animals and plants, forests safeguard the planet’s biodiversity and act as a naturaldefence against climate change, but they continue to be degraded and lost at a rate of 3.3 million hectares per year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Of the countries with substantial forest cover, many have lost upwards of 3% of their forests since 1995. Only four countries with over 50mn hectares have improved forest cover – China, India, USA and Russia.
