Miss France Iris Mittenaere crowned Miss Universe 2016
A 23-year-old dental student from France has won the Miss Universe crown in the annual pageant held this year in the Philippines.

Iris Mittenaere, who comes from the small town of Lille in northern France, said on Monday in reply to a final question from pageant host Steve Harvey that she would be honored if she just landed among the three finalists, but was visibly stunned when she was announced the winner among the field of 86 contestants.
Miss Haiti, Raquel Pelissier, a 25-year-old survivor of the devastating 2010 earthquake that destroyed her hometown, was named first runner up while Miss Colombia, 23-year-old, Andrea Tovar, was second runner up
The finalists who advanced to top 3 hailed from Haiti, France, and Colombia.
Eighty-six candidates were vying for the coveted crown, which was last held by Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach from the Philippines
India's Roshmitha Harimurthy could not make it to the final 13 list of the pageant and contestants from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Thailand and the US advanced to the next round.
Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen, who won her Miss Universe pageant in the year 1994 at Manila, was also on the judges panel this year.

The last time France won the Miss Universe pageant was in 1953, on the second edition of the competition. Christiane Martel (pictured), of the town of Piennes in northeastern France, was crowned aged 21 years old
