The Bharatiya Janata Party has named its Tripura State president Biplab Kumar Deb as the chief ministerial candidate. Jishnu Devvarman, a member of the royal family, has been named to the post of deputy chief minister
The decision was announced after a meeting of BJP Legislature Party along with central leaders, including Nitin Gadkari, in Agartala. Mr. Deb will soon meet Governor Tathagata Roy to stake claim to form a government.
The BJP ended the 25-year Left Front rule in the State by winning 35 out of the 59 seats. Its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, won eight seats, taking the tally to 43.
Biplab Kumar Deb, a gym trainer-turned-politician was made the president of the State unit three years back.
Jishnu Devvarman will contest from the Charilam constituency where election is scheduled on March 12. The 59-year-old Jishnu Devvarman is the uncle of king Pradyot Kishore Manikya.
