2018 India Tour of South Africa - Faf du Plessis Ruled Out of ODI, T20I Series Due to Finger Injury

In a big blow to South Africa's chances in the ongoing series against India, their skipper Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the ODI series and upcoming T20I series, owing to a finger injury. According to Cricbuzz, du Plessis had injured his right index finger during the first ODI in Durban on Thursday  Feb 01,2018, where he scored a brilliant 120.

All-rounder Farhaan Behardien has been named his replacement, but the skipper for rest of the ODI series is yet to be decided. Also Heinrich Klaasen, has earned his maiden ODI call-up as a reserve wicket-keeper in the squad. Earlier, star batsman AB de Villiers was ruled out from the first three ODIs. Also, their star pacer Dale Steyn got injured during the first Test at Cape Town.

Faf will undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation and would aim to be fit for the first Test match against Australia starting in Durban on March 1, 2018. His injury is expected to heal in 3-6 weeks time.

In the first match at Durban, it was due to du Plessis' ton that South Africa could post a total of 269 runs. This was his 9th international ODI hundred, and second against India. Du Plessis felt the hosts were 60 runs short after electing to bat first on a Durban surface that progressively quickened up.

After the match he said, "We didn't bat well. As a batting unit, for the second top score to be 30 or 40 shows that there weren't partnerships. The most basic thing about ODI cricket is two guys getting together and putting some sort of partnership together."

"I thought the Indian spinners bowled well but still we should have been better against them," he added. Du Plessis said it was the batsmen's job to give the bowlers a decent enough target to defend.

"I certainly think we needed 300. 260 odd wasn't enough on that deck. The last two games we played here, we got more runs and won. We chased 370 here against Australia.

"So, I think it's unfair to say to the bowlers that they were poor. I thought purely we didn't have runs. If we had got 60-70 more, it would have been easier for our bowlers," he said.
