United Nations Security Council (UNSC) - All You Need To Know

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations(UN)charged with the maintenance of International Peace & Security  as well as accepting new members to the United Nations and approving any changes to its United Nations(UN)Charter

Its powers include -
  • the establishment of Peacekeeping Operations
  • the establishment of International Sanctions and
  •  the authorization of Military Action through  UNSC Resolutuons 

UNSC is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions to member states. The Security Council held its first session on Jan 17,1946

UNSC has 10 Members - 5 Permanent Members and 10 Non Permanent Members

The 5 Permanent Members are

  1. France
  2. Britain 
  3. Russia 
  4. China
  5. USA

The 10 Non Permanent Members are elected on a regional basis to serve two-year terms

UNSC Presidency  rotates monthly among its members.

Unlike the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) meets year-round. Each Security Council member must have a representative available at UN Headquarters at all times in case an emergency meeting becomes necessary'

The UNSC  generally meets in a designated chamber in the United Nations Conference Bulidng in New York City in USA

The chamber was designed by the Norwegian architect Arnstein Arneberg and was a gift from Norway.

The UNSC has also held meetings in cities including Nairobi in Kenya;Addis Ababa in Ethiopia; Panama City in Panama; and Geneva in Switzerland
