Aruna Budda Reddy created history on Saturday afternoon by becoming
the first Indian gymnast to clinch an individual medal at the Gymnastics
World Cup in Melbourne,Australia
The 22-year-old gymnast won a bronze medal in the women’s vault. She scored 13.649 to finish behind gold medallist Tjasa Kysslef of Slovenia and Emily Whitehead of Australia who took silver.
The other Indian gymnast in the competition, Pranati Nayak finished on the sixth spot with a score of 13.416.
Reddy who is a former black belt and karate trainer had won her first National medal in 2005 which convinced her to take up the sport. She had finished on the 14th spot at the qualification round of the Vault apparatus at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and went one up with a ninth-place finish at the Asian Games. She had done well in the 2017 Asian Championships as well but had failed to win a medal. Back then, Aruna had finished on the 6th position on Vault.
This is the first time when an Indian has won an individual medal at the Gymnastics World Cup. Reddy will also be a part of India’s gymnastics contingent which will participate in the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. There will be high expectations from her to win a medal at the mega event.
Gymnastics in India had its first moment of glory when Ashish Kumar gave the country its first-ever gymnastics medal by winning a bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Six years later, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for Olympics in 52 years, where she narrowly missed out on a bronze medal.
Dipa Karmakar who was probably India’s biggest hope to win a medal in gymnastics in Commonwealth Games has been ruled out of the competition due to a knee injury. Karmakar had got this injury last year and has been undergoing treatment since then.
