Gandhi (1982): Richard Attenborough’s epic historical drama traces Gandhi’s life right from his early days in South Africa to his assassination. The Ben Kingsley-starrer won eight Academy Awards and earned $52 million in domestic box office collections.
Malcolm X (1992): The epic biographical drama, directed by Spike Lee, is based on the life of Afro-American activist Malcolm X, including his criminal career, ministry and assassination. The Denzel Washington-starrer made $48 million in domestic box office collections.
Braveheart (1995): Mel Gibson directed and played the lead in the epic war film based on William Wallace, a late 13th century Scottish warrior, who led the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. It won five Academy Awards and made over $210 million in box office collections.
Elizabeth (1998): Shekhar Kapur directed Cate Blanchett in this biographical drama based on the early years of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign. It made $82 million at the box office.
The Gathering Storm (2002): The BBC-HBO co-produced television film covers the years just prior to World War II in the life of Winston Churchill. The film, which starred Albert Finney as Churchill and Vanessa Redgrave as his wife Clementine Churchill, was directed by Richard Loncraine.
Downfall (2004): The internationally co-produced historical war drama depicts the final 10 days of Adolf Hitler’s rule over Nazi Germany in 1945. Featuring Bruno Ganz in the title role, the Oliver Hirschbiegel-directed film made $92 million at the box office.
The Queen (2006) The British drama directed by Stephen Frears depicts the response of the British royal family to the death of Princess Diana and features Helen Mirren in the title role of Queen Elizabeth II. It won Mirren the Academy Award for best actress and earned $123 million in box office collections.
W. (2008): The Oliver Stone directed biographical drama is based on the life and presidency of George W. Bush. Featuring Josh Brolin in the title role, it made $29 million at the box office.
The King’s Speech (2010): Colin Firth played King George VI, coping with a stammer and relying on a speech therapist to make his first wartime radio broadcast on Britain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1939. The Tom Hooper-directed film earned four Academy Awards and made $414 million at the box office.
Lincoln (2012): The Steven Spielberg film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as American president Abraham Lincoln and covers the final four months of his life, including his efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, passed. It won Day-Lewis the Academy Award for best actor and made $275 million at the box office.
