The Indian cricket team will look to break their duck at the venue when the two teams will lock horn against each other in the first ODI of the six match series at Kingsmead in Durban.
In seven ODIs against South Africa at this venue since 1992-93, India have lost six with one no-result. India did beat England and Kenya here though, during the 2003 ODI World Cup, giving them an overall two wins in nine ODIs at Kingsmead.
However, it is not going to be an easy task for skipper Virat Kohli and his troops as Team India's record in South Africa has been abysmal in the past. India have played four bilateral series in South Africa and have lost all four. And and out of these four series, Proteas have whitewashed India twice. The 'Men In Blue' lost 5-2 in 1992-93, 4-0 in 2006-07, 3-2 in 2010-11 and 2-0 in 2013-14
India have also been part of two triangular series in 1996-97 and 2001-02, featuring Zimbabwe and Kenya respectively, but the Proteas emerged victors on both occasions. In total, the two teams have played 28 times since 1992-93 in South Africa, with the Proteas winning 21 of those.
If history is firmly against India then South Africa's form at home make matters worse for yhe visitors. The Proteas have just lost two out of the 19 matches they have played since 1st January 2016. Also, they have won their last the 17 matches on the trot, including the following results -

South Africa's last defeat at home came against England at Port Elizabeth on 6th Feb 2016 and therefore, they take the numero uno spot in the list of best win rates at home since 1st Jan 2016
When asked about India's poor record in ODIs at Durban, vice-captain Rohit Sharma said" I don't think these things matter because so many things change. The teams have changed. The generations have changed. It's a 50-over game, so you get time. Even if the first 10 overs go bad, you can always come back."
"We can't give up on the situation. Whoever comes into bat must remember that the team has to be kept in the game. These small things are important as opposed to the past records," he added.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat first
It was a brilliant effort by Team India as they defeated South Africa in the first ODI at Kingsmead, Durban by six wickets to go 1-0 up in the series.
Skipper Virat Kohli (112), as usual was the main man in the 270-run chase as he brought up his 33rd ODI century in the match.
Along with Kohli, it was Ajinkya Rahane (79 in 86 Balls with 4x5 and 6x2)) who batted beautifully and strung a partnership of 189 runs for the third wicket.
India achieved the target with 27 balls to spare.
The duo did not put a step wrong during the chase, and bailed the Indian team out of trouble when Shikhar Dhawan departed after a tragic run-out for 35 runs in 29 Balls with 4x6
The score read 67/2 at that time, and had more wickets fallen at that stage, the match could have gone either way

Virat Kohli further enhanced his reputation as a 'chase master' as he
smashed his 33rd hundred to lead India to a six-wicket victory over
South Africa in the first cricket one-dayer as India chased down the
target of 270 with 4.3 overs to spare. Kohli struck 112 off 119 balls
with the help of 10 boundaries and put on 189 runs for the third wicket
with Ajinkya Rahane (79 runs of 86 balls), the highest stand for India
in South Africa. Kohli notched up his 20th hundred in a run-chase, out
of which 18 have been successfully converted to victories.
Virat Kohli
celebrated his maiden hundred on South African soil in style, reaching
there off 105 balls. In doing so, he equalled Sourav Ganguly's record of
most ODI hundreds as Indian captain. Both now have 11 centuries, with
Kohli reaching the milestone in 41 innings as compared to Ganguly's 142
innings.

Virat Kohli once again played a captain's hand as India romped home to a six-wicket win the first ODI against South Africa in Durban.
This isn't
the first time that India has chased down a total in ODIs due to the
superlative batting of Virat Kohli, who holds the record for the most
number of centuries in successful chases in ODIs.
Here's a list of Kohli's 18 centuries in successful run chases.1) 107 vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata, December 2009: India chased down Sri Lanka's total of 315 in 48.1 overs
This was Virat's 14th ODI and he came into bat at 23/2 after Sehwag & Tendulkar were dismissed. Virat showed great maturity to string together a 224-run stand with fellow Delhi batsman Gautam Gambhir, which put India on the path to victory.
2) 102* vs Bangladesh, Dhaka, January 2010: India chased down Bangladesh's total of 247 in 43 overs
The target wasn't big enough but the pitch wasn't the easiest to bat on. Kohli, who came in to bat in the 12th over, held the innings together even as he played shots in all parts of the park. His unbeaten 102 in just 95 balls guided Team India to an easy victory.
3) 118 vs Australia, Vizag, October 2010: India chased down Australia's total of 289 in 48.5 overs
Australia's Clint McKay had sent back the India openers early and Kohli was yet again under pressure to play a long innings to put the chase back on track. Kohli put together a 137-run stand with Yuvraj Singh and got India back in the reckoning. While Yuvraj departed in the 34th over, Kohli carried on and shared an 84-run stand with Raina to all but take India to a win. By the time Kohli was dismissed, victory was in sight and was duly achieved.
4) 112* vs England, New Delhi, October 2011: India chased down England's total of 237 in 36.4 overs
The bowlers had set the stage for India to complete an easy win, but Kohli and Gambhir were in a mood to turn it into a rout. Kohli went on a rampage, hitting 16 boundaries to stay unbeaten on 112 in just 98 deliveries as India overhauled the target in the 37th over.
5) 117 vs West Indies, Vizag, December 2011: India chased down West Indies's total of 269 in 48.1 overs
The Windies had put up a challenging total and their bowlers made the chase even more stiff for India by reducing the hosts to 84/3. But Kohli was in no mood to throw in the towel as he put his head down to string together a 163-run stand with Rohit Sharma to pave the way for an Indian win.
6) 133* vs Sri Lanka, Hobart, February 2012: India chased down Sri Lanka's total of 320 in 36.4 overs
This was the knock that showed the world Virat Kohli's destructive powers as a batsman and the full array of shots that the man possessed. India needed a massive boost to their run-rate if they were to stand a chance to enter the final of the tri-nation tournament in Australia. But Sri Lanka piled on a massive total batting first. Just when everything seemed lost, Virat Kohli hit top gear. Dispatching bowlers like Lasith Malinga to all parts of the Bellerive Oval, Kohli hit 16 boundaries and 2 sixes to take India to an improbable win in just 36.4 overs. Kohli stayed unbeaten on 133.
7) 183 vs Pakistan, Mirpur, March 2012: India chased down Pakistan's total of 329 in 47.5 overs
India met Pakistan in the Asia Cup after an unexpected loss against Bangladesh in the previous match. Pakistani batsmen piled on the misery on the Indian bowlers by scoring a total well in excess of 300. It was do-or-die for India. In came Virat Kohli and played the innings of his one-day international career. Virat made mincemeat of the Pakistani attack as he scored a career-best 183 in just 148 balls. His knock, studded with 22 boundaries and a six, was the cornerstone of yet another memorable Indian victory over Pakistan.
8) 128* vs Sri Lanka, Colombo, July 2012: India chased down Sri Lanka's total of 251 in 42.2 overs
India needed a victory to seal the series, but a relatively easy chase became tricky as the 'men in blue' were 3 wickets down for just 60 runs on the board. By now Sri Lanka knew about Virat Kohli's ability to bat under pressure and take India home from precarious situations. And they got a taste of the same as Kohli played a brilliantly controlled knock. Yet again the India no. 3 was unbeaten as he took the team home.
9) 115 vs Zimbabwe, Harare, July 2013: India chased down Zimbabwe's total of 228 in 44.5 overs
Yet another imperious knock, this time against a not so difficult bowling attack. But the runs still needed to be made and Virat Kohli was not going to let go of an opportunity against a team like Zimbabwe.
10) 100* vs Australia, Jaipur, October 2013: India chased down Australia's total of 359 in 43.3 overs
The Australians were in India and they had won the first ODI. India needed to bounce back but the Aussies amassed 359 on a placid Sawai Mansingh Stadium wicket. Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma laid the foundation with a 176-run stand. While Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 141, it was a Virat Kohli blitzkrieg that stole the show. Virat was in a mood to punish the Australians as he hit 8 boundaries and 7 sixes to bring up an unbeaten ton in just 52 deliveries. The Aussies had no place to hide.
11) 115* vs Australia, Nagpur, October 2013: India chased down Australia's total of 350 in 49.3 overs
It was a feeling of deja vu for the Aussies as Virat Kohli took them apart for the second time in the series. The Aussies needed a win to clinch the series and piled up 350 while batting first. But the Indian openers gave a good start yet again. Rohit Sharma's wicket brought Kohli into the middle and he did what he does the best. Kohli's willow yielded boundary after boundary as he scored an unbeaten 116 in just 66 balls. His innings was studded with 18 fours and a six.
12) 136 vs Bangladesh, Fatullah, February 2014: India chased down Bangladesh's total of 279 in 49 overs
It was the Asia Cup again and this time Virat showcased his prowess in front of the home team. Chasing a fairly stiff target of 279, Kohli took control of the innings after the openers departed early. A 213-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane put the India on track for victory.
13) 139* vs Sri Lanka, Ranchi, November 2014: India chased down Sri Lanka's total of 286 in 48.4 overs
Team India was looking to complete a 5-0 whitewash over the Lankans at Ranchi. But an Angelo Mathews century had given Sri Lankan bowlers a big enough total to defend. The Indian openers departed early and yet again Kohli had to build the foundation of a chase. The brilliant architect that he is, Kohli first shared a century stand with Ambati Rayudu and then took complete control of the innings. Wickets kept falling at the other end but Kohli remained calm to stay unbeaten till THE end yet again as India reached home with more than an over to spare.
14) 154* vs New Zealand, Mohali, October 2016: India chased down New Zealand's total of 285 in 48.2 overs
It took Virat Kohli almost 2 years to finally equal Sachin Tendulkar's record of 14 centuries in successful run chases. Virat shared a 151-run stand with Dhoni to put the Indian chase on track and then unleashed his power strokes to completely deflate the Kiwi attack. This was the 8th time that Virat stayed unbeaten as he guided India to victory.
15) 122 vs England, Pune, January 2017: October 2016: India chased down England's total of 350 in 48.1 overs
This has to be the most special knock for Virat Kohli as it came in his first match as official captain of the Indian ODI team. With the score reading 63/4 with the English pacers running riot, all hopes of victory had vanished. But Kohli being Kohli, kept going in the company of Kedar Jadhav, who too played a fabulous knock and scored 120 in just 76 balls. Kohli played second fiddle to the attacking Jadhav and then upped the ante at the right time to get the run rate down to close to six runs an over. He wasn't there to see his team through, but had laid the foundation of a great run chase.
16) 111* vs West Indies, Jamaica, July 2017: India chased down West Indies' total of 205 in 36.5 overs
India were shocked in the 4th ODI of the series by the Windies, with the team failing to chase down a sub-200 total. But the 'Men in Blue' were in no mood to let the hosts draw the series after their bowlers had skittled the opposition out for 205. India lost the early wicket of Shikhar Dhawan yet again but captain Virat Kohli was determined to not allow any hiccups thereafter. He joined forces with the reliable Ajinkya Rahane and the duo started chipping away at the Windies total.
Virat Kohli had had a fairly average series thus far by his own lofty standards with only one knock of above fifty. He looked in sublime form, playing shots all around the park and completely dominated the Windies bowlind. He first shared a 79-run stand with Rahane and then an unbeaten century stand with Dinesh Karthik (50*) as the duo took India home on a canter eventually.
17) 110* vs Sri Lanka, Colombo, September 2017: India chased down Sri Lanka's total of 238 in 46.3 overs
India went into the final ODI of the series looking complete a whitewash and the bowlers made their job easier by bowling the hosts out for 238 runs. Virat Kohli wasn't going to let go of an opportunity to improve his batting record against a pathetic Sri Lankan attack and did what he does best. After India lost both openers cheaply, Kohli decided to play the sheet anchor's role, stringing two important partnerships with Manish Pandey (36) and Kedar Jadhav (63). The Indian captain remained unbeaten on 110 as the visitors chased down the modest total easily, his innings was studded with 9 boundaries.
18) 112 vs South Africa, Durban, February 2018: India chased down South Africa's total of 269/8 in 45.3 overs
India started the ODI series with revenge on their mind after going down narrowly in the Test series. South African captain Faf du Plessis decided to bat first on wicket that was double paced but vindicated his decision by scoring a century (120), which propelled the Proteas to a fighting total of 269 runs. India's opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan provided the visitors a steady start. India though were in a spot of bother at 67/2 once the openers departed. Captain Virat Kohli led from the front and took the attack back to the Proteas with his fine stroke play. He along with the mesmeric Ajinkya Rahane (79) stitched a 189-run third-wicket stand which eventually put India on the road to an easy victory.
Virat Kohli Joins Elite List With Durban Ton, He Now Has a Century in Every Test-playing Nation He Has Played In
Virat Kohli has added a fresh feather into his already illustrious cap by slamming his 33rd ODI ton against South Africa during the first match of the six-match series at Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday.Riding on Kohli's maiden ODI ton in the 'Rainbow Nation', the 'Men in Blue' ended South Africa's 17-match winning streak at home and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Kohli now holds the unique distinction of having scored centuries in every Test-playing nation that he has played in so far. In total, Kohli has now scored a total of 33 centuries in nine Test-playing nations, with only Pakistan being left out of the list as he hasn't travelled to the country yet.

Also, Kohli joins legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya in the illustrious list of batsmen who have scored centuries in nine Test-playing nations. Sachin missed out on a century in West Indies while Zimbabwe stopped Jayasuriya from crossing the 100-run mark in their backyard and therefore these two gentlemen couldn't complete their respective sets of centuries in every Test-playing nation then.
But as far Kohli is concerned, he has etched his name on to the honour boards of stadiums across the world, wherever has stepped foot in, and now South Africa has become the latest country to bow down to the brilliance of the swashbuckling Indian batsman.
