Australia reminded India of their might in the longest format of the
game as the 'underdogs' thumped in-form India by 333 runs, inside just
three days in the first Test of the four-match series in Pune.
Just to put this Aussie victory in perspective, Virat Kohli and his troops seemed invincible and were touted as firm favourites to clinch the series ahead of this Test.
In their last 20 matches on home soil, India had won 17 and drawn the rest three matches.
Also, India were on a 19-match unbeaten streak overall. But Steven Smith and his men put on a scintillating three-day performance that inflicted one of the heaviest defeat in India's Test history.
19 matches was India’s longest unbeaten streak in Tests, going past their 17 match streak between September 1985 and March 1987. The current sequence started off with a 278-run win in Colombo after which they added 13 more wins. The previous longest sequence had just four wins, a tie and a 12 draws. India reached the number nineteen Tests under Virat Kohli’s captaincy after they romped home to 208-run victory over Bangladesh.
India last tasted a home defeat in Tests in the defeat against England in Kolkata in 2012. The only longer sequence came between January 1977 and January 1980, when India played 20 Tests at home, winning six and drawing 14. However, since then, India have won 17 Tests and drawn 3 others.
"We got outplayed in this game. We got to take it on the chin, accept that they outplayed us. It was our worst batting display in the last two years. We were not good enough on any of the three days. It was the case of us not applying ourselves too well. We need to see what we did wrong," said Kohli at the post match presentation.
The Indian captain also agreed that the visitors exploited the conditions better.

Australia captain Steven Smith was all praise for man-of-the-match Steve O'Keefe, terming his match-haul of 12 for 70 an "incredible" performance.
Malaysia-born O'Keefe, in only his fifth Test and first in India, scalped six for 35 in a sensational spell of 6 for 5 in 24 balls to run through the home team's first innings as they lost 7 wickets for 11 runs to be 105 all out.
Steve Smith produced a batting master class in the second innings, albeit with a touch of fortune, to smash his 18th Test century, 10th as captain and his first century in India.
