Colombian Congress ratifies new Farc peace accord Wednesday Nov 30,2016

Colombian legislators approved a  peace agreement late Wednesday Nov 30,2016 with the country’s communist guerrillas, ending Latin America’s longest armed conflict, which killed hundreds of thousands of people over the course of 52 years.

Legislators ratified the peace deal 130-0 after members of the party of former President Álvaro Uribe, who vigorously opposed the agreement, walked out of the legislative chambers

The ratification by the lower house comes a day after a similar unanimous Senate vote, 75-0, in favor of the treaty, which was also preceded by a walkout by the supporters of Mr. Uribe, who is now a senator.

Under the agreement ratified Wednesday, the guerrillas will have six months to turn in their weapons and start a political party. The government will also be able to implement programs to further peace, such as improving conditions in the countryside.

An earlier peace agreement with the 6,000-strong Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, was voted down by a narrow margin after being put to a popular referendum in early October 2016
