singer Katy Perry is set to be the global ambassador for Alibaba's 'Singles
Day' gala, its annual shopping festival with transactions reaching
billions of dollars.
The event is held annually on November 11 eclipses Black Friday in the US.
Retailer Alibaba heavily discounts goods
on its site for 'Single's Day' with transactions in 2015 surpassing 94
billion yuan (£11 billion)
Over 200
banks and Alipay, Alibaba's online financial payment service, processed
710 million payments in 24 hours. At its peak payments were around
85,900 deals a second.
The company is owned by Jack Ma, who according to Forbes has a net worth of $28.5 billion (£23 billion).
Katy Perry
is popular in China and is often referred to as 'Fruit Sister' due to
the colourful costumes she wears both live and in her music videos.
'Singles
Day' started in 1993 as an appreciation of being single.
